I'm so out of touch. I've never even heard of 'Babel', 'Letters From Iwo Jima', or 'The Queen'.

And Eddie Murphy and Marky Mark as Oscar nominees? That's a scary thought.

I wish Studio Ghibli had done something because that Animated category is a joke. Cars, Happy Feet, and Monster House all look like shit. And I'm an animated movie connoisseur.

You obviously don't read movie threads then or you don't read newpapers.

Babel won best picture at the Golden Globes.

Get it together man.

Besides the fact that there is more to an animated movie than visuals (sound, plot, characterization, dialogue), I can't equate Pixar with looking like shit. Help me here.

At least all five Best Picture noms are films I'm interested in seeing.

Murphy: Comedy doesn't get the respect drama does, but it's often harder. Jim Carrey turned in some great performances in The Truman Show and Man on the Moon.

Wahlberg: Is a damn good actor.

Well, Cars looks amazing. Story-wise, I can't say, haven't seen it, but the visuals are truly stunning. You have to admit that. I have a feeling it's shit story, however.

I've seen it. Hell, I own it (or, the kids do).
It's actually not a bad story and I didn't expect too much either. And yeah, it does look amazing.
Worth a rental... and the couple of bucks and hour and a half.

mark wahlberg was awesome in the departed - "maybe, maybe not. maybe fuck yourself. "

mike & mike were saying this morning they hadn't heard of babel and didn't even know how to pronounce it. i know i'm not so into movies anymore, but this one had big names and was advertised everywhere. it still wasn't very good, though.

True. But if it's an Oscar-nominated movie, I'd assume I would have seen commercials at least.

And Cars? I've seen all the other Pixar movies and liked them all. But what I've seen of this one, based on commercials and them playing it incessantly in the electronics department at work, does not look interesting at all. And the fact that Larry The Cable Guy is one of the main characters does not bode well.

It might look good but there's more to a movie than that. And I'm not a fan of computer animation in the first place.

He very nearly stole the show. Him and Alec Baldwin both were awesome. Can't wait to get it on DVD on Feb 13.

I agree, but when you say things like 'animated movie connoisseur' and 'look like shit' in the same two-sentence paragraph, that notion doesn't come across very well, if at all.

FWIW, Larry the Cable Guy is a fictional character. You may not like his schtick, but that doesn't mean the actor he plays is a one-trick pony (though his Cars character might be largely based/influenced on said trick).

I'm kinda happy Volver didn't get nominated for Foreign flick. It was good but not that good. I'd like to think the entire rest of the world is capable of producing at least 5 films better than it in this day & age.

Anyone see After The Wedding, Das Leben der Anderen or Water? I put Water on hold at my library.

Guess I need to se Babel

speaking of, big ups for alan arkin's nomination.

there was an article in the new york times last week (or the week before) about him. i guess he got some critical acclaim for portraying a senior citizen like he did. the interview with him about it was terrible, though.

Haven't seen Happy Feet or Monster House (I wouldn't expect much from either although I plan to see the former), but Cars was a decent movie. It may be Pixar's worst, but it was still worth seeing and better than most of the animated movies out there. That said, I thought Over the Hedge was much better than Cars, and I'm sure it deserves the nomination over some shit like Monster House. It may not have gotten it because Happy Feet was put out by the same studio (Dreamworks).

My thoughts exactly. And Wahlberg has no fucking right to be able to act well after that video in his underwear.

I saw Babel last week...what a giant downer that movie is.

Great acting, but major fucking downer and way too long.

Leo Dicraprio-awful!

Glad to see Ryan Gosling nominated for Half Nelson, he won't win...but he's fantastic in that movie.

Yep. I was genuinely surprised, and more than a little reminded of Catch Me If You Can, which he also did well in, I thought.

Couldn't agree more. He kind of annoyed me with The Aviator and Gangs of New York but I thought he was top notch in BOTH Blood Diamond and The Departed.

Could've been the material but I thought he was great.

Your taste in movies is almost as bad as your taste in music. You wouldn't know talent if The Archangel Gabriel personally bestowed it upon you. BLECH!

Are Oscar voters afraid Clint Eastwood will kill them and their entire families if he doesn't get nominated? I haven't seen that movie, nor will I...but I bet you dollars to donuts its slow and boring.

Little Miss Sunshine?! What hath ye wrought, oh "indie" filmmakers?

Babel looked so bad that it was painful.

Glad to see Whitaker get a nod...great turn as idi Amin.

I hate Leo, I'm going to have to twist around a tired hipster cliche and say

"I hated him before he was huge"

with the exception of Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, but then again, how hard is it to play a retard?
