There really isn't one style or fad of music that can be tied to this decade the way, say, grunge/nu metal/alternative was for the 90's, AOR/hair metal/new wave/over-produced music was for the 80's, arena rock/prog rock/punk was for the 70's, etc. I think there might be only one style of music, perhaps, that might be considered exclusive to the 00's 10 or 20 years from now: emo. I think there is too many styles of music now then ever there was: what's popular this year will be out of style next year. I think the world of music in this day and age is changing to fast for there to be any one style of music to leave it's stamp on this decade. Agree? I can't imagine ten years from now where someone will say "that's too 00's" the way grunge sounds somewhat out-of-date today.

Perhaps so. But is there truly an indie sound? Iron & Wine sounds nothing like, say, Apples in Stereo. There seems to be different styles within Indie.
Indie, is more or less a label for bands that seem to be on independant record labels.

For one thing, those are all shitty, ineffectual descriptions of the decades they supposedly represent, but they work for you because you obviously weren't around for them. Likewise, the "sound" of the '00s will be defined by a bunch of future cretins who are barely even out of diapers right now. That's just the way of the world.

Really? I was alive and well in those decades (I'm 33 now). And my "shitty and ineffectual" descriptions where generalizations and not necessarily meant to be critical. My intention was hardly meant to put you on the defensive. How would *you* describe the 70's/80's/90's?

What's "smug" about my descriptions? They seem fairly accurate.

I wasn't speaking of your "descriptions." I was answering your original question, sport.

I wouldn't, because attempting to define a decade as a single sound is a losing, narrow-minded proposition.

For example, if the '80s are represented by AOR/hair metal/new wave/over-produced music, then where do the Replacements fall in that description? How about the Fleshtones, the Dream Syndicate, Bad Brains, or Grand Master Flash?

It's just like what YOU said about the '00s: there were, and always have been, too many styles of music to adequately pigeonhole an entire decade.

This is like trying to play Scrabble with a Venutian. I'm throwing my tiles back on the table.

Uh, they were generalizations. There was no way I can speak for every single type or style or band in those decades (hence my deliberate"narrow-mindedness"). Those "shitty" and "ineffectual" descriptions are what immediately came to mind.

Amazing. Truly amazing. Pop Todd appears the only person not to be offended by my thread.

So then what's your point about the '00s? This decade will obviously be viewed by some likewise ineffectual generalization that completely ignores the reality. How will it be remembered? WRONGLY, that's how.

Forget it. I wasn't expecting any arguments on the matter at all. I certainly didn't expect people to get defensive and nasty over it. *laughs*

Not meaning to be "defensive," but the examples you gave were various marketing labels grouped together with slahes. I don't think you gave a sound for any of the decades. It's not your fault because it can't be done, of course.

For me the 00's sound is that of lonely slackers feverishly typing their opinions, with feigned conviction, over the internet.

At least you have to give me an 'A' for effort.
