Yeah, I guess the truth can bring out the worst in people.

I just don't see how you can nail down an entire decade with one or two buzz words that media sources will throw around with great abandon. If you mean in terms of general exposure and radio play, then the 00s are about 2nd rate hip-hop and American Idol.

But we who understand and appreciate good music know that the grass is greener where fewer people trod. And I believe this will always be true about popular music.

Amazing. Truly amazing. Pop Todd appears the only person not to be offended by my thread.

You appear to be incapable of considering opinions without taking them as a personal affront.

Given that unfortunate proclivity, maybe you'd feel more comfortable at this message board instead.

Funny that he pointed out Todd considering Todd didn't say much in this thread. It's definitely Spade Kitty. Force of habit is hard to break.

The best way to describe the 00's is the sound of whining by a group of under-achieving, self-loathing, paranoid, elitist, smug, lazy, malcontents under the guise of "intellectual" and pompous art rock (re: indie rock).

I'm so glad sensei that you're not smug or pompous. Because God knows we've had enough of that nonsense from those other sorts.

My response to everything V8er said in this thread:

Whereas I can see overlooking the Replacements in the 80s because they never attained huge mainstream success, you can't overlook these styles of the 1990s

Gangsta Rap and Dancefloor Pop (1990-1991)
Grunge/Alternative Rock (1992-1996)
Punk/Pop Punk (1994-1996)
Ska Punk (and Neo-Swing to some extent) (1996-1997)
Big Beat (1996-1998)
Nu-Metal (1997-1999+)
Teeny Bopper Pop (1997-1999+)

ALL of these styles (and probably a few more) had at some point or another dominated the mainstream airwaves for a significant period of time in the 1990s. Like Vanlandingham said you can't sum it up so easily. If anyone thinks a decade can have a definitive sound, they have their head up their anal cavity.*

*Just wanted to note though, that many people other than V8er have their heads up anal cavities. When Time Magazine or Rolling Stone or whatever out of touch mainstream publication did or will do their "90s Retrospective" issue it will give it the title "The Flannel Generation" or something lame like that.
