I did not know that Animal Collective had a new EP out today...thanks Drinky!

It was their Australian tour EP from last year, comprised of outtakes from Feels. I haven't gotten to listen to it yet, but it seemed fairly reasonably-priced for an EP ($7) so I decided to pick it up. It's only 4 tracks, and the 4th track is a live version of the 1st track so my expectations aren't too high.

Track 2 is fantastic. It's the studio version of Tikwid. That song is another one of the tunes that should've been on Feels. Basically, they knew they wanted to release one or two singles, so they held back two great tracks (Tikwid & Fickle Cycle). They wanted to make sure there was a reason to buy the singles for all of the collectors out there (and they knew there were a bunch of em).

People is ok, but I still think it's one of the weaker new songs. Hopefully Reverend Green and Peace Bone gets a decent studio treatment during the upcoming recording sessions.

In a twangier vein, I pre-ordered the new Norman & Nancy Blake/ Tut Taylor release, Shacktown Road, a few weeks ago- release date today. And lo and bedamned, it was in the mailbox just now.

Based on my first listen, I agree with this. "People" is really thin, just kind of an atmospheric track, but I do really like the live version. It works much beter with the passionate, raw delivery as opposed to studio polish.

Overall, it's a decent EP, but not as good as Prospect Hummer, the only EP they've done that's really essential.

I pre-ordered that too. I'm also gonna pick up the new Lee Hazlewood which is out in the US today.

Others not mentioned yet:

US release of Caetano Veloso - Ce which was #2 on my top 20 last year based on the Brazilian release
Dolly Parton reissues including Jolene
Bee Gee reissues

O man, I forgot about the Hazlewood...

I can't seem to find the Hazlewood thing, except still as a pricey import on amazon.

***re-edit*** Nemmine. CDUniverse has it for 12.97.

The bonus track ("Reeboks in Heaven") on the US version of Fujiya & Miyagi is not very good, IMO.

And I think puma agrees that the cover on the US version kinda sucks.

Still, I'm sure it'll be significantly cheaper than the import.

I picked up The Good, The Bad and The Queen. I wanted to buy more, but I'm saving for a shopping spree in a couple of weeks.

Upon first listen, I like.

Besides the obvious Shins, I'm excited for Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra. Bizarre concept:

We Are All From Somewhere Else is comprised of 3 distinct sections, and corresponds to a story involving an exploding star, cosmic transformation, a sting ray, the travels of the sting ray, intelligent conversations with electric eels, the destructive power of humans, the death and ascension of sting ray, the transformation of sting ray ghost to flying bird, and the transformation of bird to phoenix to rocket to flying burning matter to a new-born star.
Avant-garde fans should give a listen to the clips at the link above - pretty intriguing stuff. I've got my copy on the way.

Book one ---- the voyage
Prologue

In the constellation of cygnus
There lurks a mysterious, invisible force
The black hole
Of cygnus x-1

Six stars of the northern cross
In mourning for their sisters loss
In a final flash of glory
Nevermore to grace the night....

1
Invisible
To telescopic eye
Infinity
The star that would not die

All who dare
To cross her course
Are swallowed by
A fearsome force

Through the void
To be destroyed
Or is there something more?
Atomized ---- at the core
Or through the astral door ----
To soar....

2
I set a course just east of lyra
And northwest of pegasus
Flew into the light of deneb
Sailed across the milky way

On my ship, the rocinante
Wheeling through the galaxies,
Headed for the heart of cygnus
Headlong into mystery

The x-ray is her siren song
My ship cannot resist her long
Nearer to my deadly goal
Until the black hole ----
Gains control....

3
Spinning, whirling,
Still descending
Like a spiral sea,
Unending

Sound and fury
Drowns my heart
Every nerve
Is torn apart....

To be continued
