the list is coming almost a month into 2007 and most people have seen a hundred lists so far and read tons of blurbs on all kinds of albums. That's most likely the reason for lack of discussion.

this is true but its been true every year and it seems like there is less discussion this year.

And Opa, take a mydol and stop pissing in everyone's parade (or taxi cab for that matter).

C'mon OPA, calling the list "pedestrian" is kind of… well… pedestrian. Seems like we hear this every year. It's not like most of the stuff I really loved ended up in the Obner top 20, either.

Then let's call it Obner's Most Listened To Albums of the Year. This is surely not the best albums of the year list.

Well, if you figure out how to get 100 people to agree on what the "best albums of the year" are, let us know.

Well, I don't think an Obner List is needed. Personally, I enjoy when people post their individual lists.

WTF is with you today?

Enjoy whatever lists you want Chris. Don't crap on the work it took to try and do a board top 20.

Also, lists are all subjective anyway and YES this is the OBNER BEST ALBUMS OF THE YEAR.

I suppose I'm not allowed to have an opinion now, is that it?

So its ok for you to have an opinion but not for others to have an opinion that you should shut the f up.

same here.

It's an interesting point. Of the albums posted thus far, the only one that was on my list was The Strokes, and for me, I didn't really comment on the album because of the numerous threads about it; I didn't know what else to say except to say I still enjoy the album quite a lot. I commented on the YLT today as I own it and am largely indifferent towards it, but everything else I really haven't listened to and thus, can't really comment on.

Yes Chris. You are not allowed to have an opinion.

That's what I was saying.

This list is compiled like every other list in every other publication around the world........by consensus, therefore, it is the Obner Best Albums of the Year list.

Admit that much.

I admit, it's the consensus Best Albums of Obner List...not the Year. And do you not agree, that every year, the Top 20 albums seem to be the most listened to albums of the year and not necessarily, the best of the year? That's all I was saying.

I never considered these lists "BEST OFs" at all. They're the favourite albums of the year by a much of weirdo shut-ins. I think that says it all. I mean, if we're talking BEST albums then a record of auto-erotic gypsy folk screaming from the lower Balkans has got to be on there. It would be a CRIME if it wasn't.

I don't completely agree but we're in the same ballpark. It's all subjective and what you think is best may not be what someone else thinks is best.

I just think that the albums that end up on the list had the widest appeal. Someone who listens to a lot more electronic music and someone who normally listens to mostly power pop stuff may both find something they like about TV on the Radio and therefore the album gets counted twice even though those individual's lists probably look completely different.

Of course individual lists will have more character but that's not what I thought we were arguing.

IF:

- People tend to listen to albums they deem "good" more than other albums,

AND:

- Those people vote for those albums,

THEN:

- The resulting list will represent BOTH the "best" AND "most listened-to" albums of the year, for that group.

...they are one and the same.

Semantics, people. Haven't we had this "best of" vs "favorites" or "most listened to" discussion a million times before?

Man, takin' it back to the CMJ board... That's the kind of nostalgia that could lure nickisnotdead/sensei/v8er to this party. He being the last non-spammer -- wait, what was that? -- hold-out at the old board.

2 things that go hand in hand...

Maybe if you'd submitted your list, the top 20 would be less "pedestrian" than it appears to be so far.

Thems that don't vote don't get the right to complain about them elected results. Should've listened to P Diddy when you had the chance...

well, that takes out three heavies from the "complain about where and which albums placed" thread.

I haven't heard any of the albums so far so I'm not going to sing praises or bitch about what's picked or not picked. It seems odd though how little discussion its generated though outside of praise for those who've written reviews.

I'm also surprised at some of the things that have made the cut...not based on my perception of their quality or lack of quality but based on a seeming lack of interest in the albums by obners in general.

1. Obviously we read and remember music discussions we are interested in and opinions that are important to us register more strongly than those we think of as inconsequential.

2. Many contributors to the lists may not post a lot in general, or may post about overpaid baseball players or toiletry products.

3. Some Obnerians with pedestrian tastes may rate some music so high that it appears on the low teens on the annual list. Case in point: I put Califone as #1 which will probably make it appear soon on the list.

4. Not to worry, TVOTR or B&S will be #1... although both pretty much bored pedestrian me.

5. This list is why I keep connected to Obner... although through the years I keep getting confused about who Obnerians are and so what music they like (Dalen, damen... Billy G, Bort, Borg... for a few years I thought FT was FastNBulbous.... I can't keep track).

6. I think there should be a formula for identitying the Obnerian who most matched the Top Twenty. At which point his or her heart should be ripped from his or her chest and then the body thrown into the Sacred Pool.

7. Yo La Tengo fucking rocks.

The Brother Kite's "Waiting for the Time to be Right" is a fantastic album. Perhaps my favorite of 2006.

May not be everyone's taste, but for what it is (low budget, small indie labeL, from an out of the way state, heavily influenced by shoegaze and the Beach Boys) .... there was nothing finer.

With a recording budget and some support... this band could eventually take over the world.

Bingo. It is almost February. People have been talking about some of these albums for a full year already and been doing year-end best-of discussions for over two months.
