We have a couple of great music stores in Indy. I love browsing at either one of them. Lately, I've been buying almost all of my music from eMusic, though.

The local Homer's chain usually has every album I want to buy, I just don't buy a ton of albums right now.
I was a little pissed that they didn't have or highly publicize their 99 cent sidewalk sale where you can pick up the advance promo copies of alot of decent albums from the past year.

For buying music yes, I've got these two great independent sellers:

http://www.relativetheoryrecords.com/blog/

http://www.plan9music.com/Home

For seeing live music, not so much. Both of the above do in-store shows for up-and-coming bands which is nice. However, most of the shows I want to see are either in D.C. (3 hours north) or in Chapel Hill/Carrboro/Raleigh (3 hours south).

Yes, Atlanta has everything I want.

If I really want something, no matter how obscure, I could hit about 4-5 of the better stores in town and find it in one of them.

I rarely, maybe once a year, order online. It's usually something that has not been widely distributed and I'm ordering it directly from a label or the band's website.

I'd rather go to a local independent store and get it, maybe read some mags, maybe hear something cool at a listening station, and maybe overhear some argument about how T.Rex's "Slider" is infinitely better than "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars". You don't get that ordering online.

There is a local chain called Manifest Records (though it may have been bought recently) that has a huge used section and a good selection for new stuff. I only go there a few times a year since it's not the most convenient to me.

There is supposed to be another cool independent store not too far from me that I have been meaning to try out.

For the most part, I can find what I want...its just a matter of me making the effort.

College towns like the one I live in are usually pretty good for music. You can't go wrong with Newbury Comics, and if you buy new releases right when they come out they are almost always on sale for 8.99-12.99. We also have a great used shop called Mystery Train. These 2 stores popularity have gradually weeded out all the other ones.

Peace

I've all but given up buying new music locally. I'll still buy used from Zia, but even that's dwindled off quite a bit just due to time constraints and lack of stock because they only seem to stock really popular stuff lately. Most of my buying is from Amazon (both new and used) and Half, plus some directly from artists' sites (like Robert Fripp's DGMLive.com or Tim Berne's Screwgun.com) when they have things I want.

I always get Soundscapes and Rotate mixed up. Rotate's the one on Queen, Soundscapes is way up out of the way, right? By that venue. Lee's?

Way up out of the way? It's right near College & Bathurst, that's hardly 'out of the way'. It's about a 15 mins walk at most from Rotate This (which is on Queen somewhere near Bathrust.

Yeah, Toronto has a lot of good record stores.

I just recall having to take a streetcar to Soundscapes because it's a long distance from Union.

Minneapolis/St. Paul needs a 24 hour bowling alley. I'm not sure if these exist, but they ought to. Anybody know of one anywhere?

there's one in chicago down my street. for some reason, it's most expensive between about 10pm and 6am.

Depends on what I want. There's a great place for jazz records...a couple places that have a pretty good selection of rock stuff. But, the electronic music selection locally is extremely poor, not surprising considering that electronic music scene in town in general is close to vacant. I do most of my buying locally. Only when I can't find something do I order online. So, if it's a rock or jazz records, I'm usually grabbing it in town. If it's electronic or just something pretty obscure I want, I'll order online.

And, for decent pizza in St. Louis...since you probably want something more substantial than what is usually around here, try Blackthorn Pub. Here's a link:

http://www.gatewaytothewest.com/blackthorn/

It doesn't have that weird yellow crust you people from Chicago like, but it's a deep pan pizza with a ton of cheese and all that...pretty cheap too.

Don't worry though...live here long enough and you'll start liking Imo's. If nothing else, it's fun to give it to out-of-towners just to confuse them.

Da truf. I haven't seen the inside of a record store in years. Literally.

NYC = Ghost town.

Actually, with the exception of a truly quality used CD store, answer is pretty obvious...

Although, I only know of one good pizza place.....in NYC.....no, seriously.

Live music in Lincoln tends to be pretty weak, since we don't have any bars clubs with a capacity much larger than 150 and we are rather close to Lawrence and Omaha. We occassionally get a 2nd tier Saddle Creek band and shows like the recent The Paper Chase show and bands like Asobi Seksu and Tapes N Tapes that are just starting to rise in popularity at the time they play here.

I'm not really picky about Pizza, but Yia Yia's serves up some decent New York style and I've never really been a fan of the Chi-town style which is absent from here.

It baffles me too, but this thread suggests to me that more people are pleased than not, excepting those that live by 25¢ pop. You can find all the new trance and house 12s that you want, but there is NOWHERE here that I can shop the way I want to shop. I have had great luck in Chicago (I like Dave's), and I liked Criminal in Atlanta. I have no problem spending money in New York.

Yeah, I'm happy with our selection here. But I doubt I buy cd's as often as some of you other folks anyway. I do get a bit miffed that a lot of bands skip playing Portland between SF and Seattle.

No good Chinese food or Mongolian barbecues out here either.

Living in Venice, there's actually not a good record store particularly close. There's some pretty good used vinyl around, but as far as new CDs, Amoeba's the only one I can count on, and that's a bit of a drive, especially with traffic. So pretty much no new CDs for me during the week :/

Cincinnati has one of the greatest record stores I've ever been in - Shake It Records - right in my neighborhood.

The cruel irony is that I have no money and get most of my music online these days.
