I know very little of Seattle (my brief visits can hardly count) but SF is amazing.

Supposedly he didn't really say that...

Don't forget, also, that SF has Amoeba...and Amoeba SF is the best record store on EARTH as far as I'm concerned. Seattle probably gets a lot of bands but SF probably has more, too.

Would you be working the Financial District in SF? MUNI is pretty good in general.

Seems like you just can't go wrong with whatever you choose...congratulations on being in that kind of position.

All things being equal, it's just so important to spend your working hours in a place where you want to be with your co-workers. Yeah, you're there to work, but if the people in the office don't make you happy, then it becomes harder to get out of bed in the morning. You're guaranteed that's not the case in San Fran...plus, it doesn't hurt to be able to ride on your boss' coattails. Having your boss be a big supporter is key.

I'm trying to head that direction myself. I actually just sent my resume out to SF, and then one up to Seattle recently. Both cities have charm.

Now that you mentioned your offers maybe SF is the better choice. You'd instantly have people you like and no commute. The cities are pretty similar from what i hear (haven't been to SF since i was 13). Not to mention you get AL & NL games to choose from.

I'm biased towards Seattle because i'm from WA and like the NW sensibilty (if there is one).

2 of my favorite cities. Congrats. I'm trying to think of something bad to say about your personality to take you down a whole peg but I haven't had enough coffee. maybe i'll check back later. now i don't like my corporate soul-sucking job, whereas yesterday i was complacently resigned to it.

Actually Peets (way better than Starbucks) was originated in Berkeley, and North Beach introduced espresso to America in the 50's (Cafe Trieste and the beats) and has more espresso joints per block than any neighborhood in the US.

It would be a whole lot more charming if they had more media jobs opening.

Ballmer's gone to hell in a handbasket ever since Meldrick Lewis hung up his pork-pie hat.

Oh, hell yeah. SF's crazy, traffic-wise. There is no way you could even dream about how bad the commute is there. To anywhere. And don't get me started on rents.

And besides, the Big One (earthquake) is looongg overdue.

That Volcano called Mount Ranier could go off at anytime too.

Congrats on the job offers, I wish shit like that happened to me and soon.

Speaking of, I saw Steve Ballmer in a Starbucks in Redmond on Wednesday.

By the way you described both jobs, you gave a negative vibe for the second offer. I think you've already decided and are just afraid to make the decision.

PS -- I remember that story with your coworker. You posted it on CMJ ages ago!

This is along the lines of what I was thinking...go with the more predictable gig.

What vibe?

I mean, you're definitely right, but what language gave you that impression.

I guess I'm trying to be sure about AG, which is tough with another great option.

I'll highlight them:

Quote:
Offer 2: Marketing research for Microsoft in Seattle (well, Redmond). Basically determining key drivers of their volume licensing business (that is, selling software to businesses) and having a real impact on what the company does. It will be a very small team and they gave me a really attractive offer (I know what other graduating MBAs got). Lower salary, but really good signing bonus, stock, and relocation benefits. I'd want to live in Seattle though and commuting home from Redmond SUCKS. Probably better, or at least more predictable, hours than the econ consulting job. Also has the attraction of trying something new. All the people I met there seem very nice, but I clearly don't know and love them as much as a few of the people I know at the other firm. Plus, Microsoft is evil. But their also a big client of the other firm, so maybe they're both evil.

hehe no worries - i'm fine.

if you're a city person, then SF. it's a fantastic city. great food, art, culture, underground music scene, etc. not to mention a great public trans system so you don't necessarily need a car - parking is expensive, driving around there is insane because of all the hills, one way streets, traffic in such a condensed area... so that weighs with the cost of living there.

and i'd steer of major corporations. you're just a number. the first offer sounds like something where you can really grow with the company, whereas microsoft is one of THEM.

either way, best of luck with what you decide to do and relocating to another city is a great opportunity.

Congrats! I vote SF - good colleagues and a good commute makes up for the slightly longer hours. It's a great city, and you have chances to move up... no brainer. Will you get me a gig if I bail on bodymore, murdaland? Our new mayor is gonna flush this place down the toilet.
