why is there such outrage over the life pursuit topping the poll? it's a really good album by a band that a lot of people like or love.

I just doubt that anyone would have said it was their #1 album of the year. As frosted pointed out, it probably won by having mass appeal rather than being thought of by anyone as being something amazing, groundbreaking, or otherwise #1-worthy.

Its actually a pretty good album. I don't understand the "forced hook" perspective. I might even *gasp* drink some beers on a summer afternoon with it on. (Which is I guess why Cracka responded the way he did)

Only 1 album in my Top-20 actually made it, and even then it SHARED that spot with another CD. I figured maybe the Timberlake or Clipse CDs would make it, but no.

Wait for it...

I think the outrage about Belle & Sebastian being number one is that since it doesn't feature atonal tunings, bizarre chromatic chord sequences or dadaist lyrics, it could actually be accessible to 'ordinary people' and as we all know the cultured white middle class constituant of Obner know better than the sort of peasant that taps along to whatever is on the radio.

As Orwell might have wrote:

"tuneless barrage of strange instruments - good, well crafted tune you can hum - bad
self loathing misery of post modern world to music - good, old time feel good vibe - bad
only elitist pricks have heard of them or could ever like them - good, normal people might actually like it if they ever got the opportunity to hear it - bad"

You forgot that it doesn't have a American folky or southern Americana vibe.

The B&S album was on 34 of the 94 lists I received, and was ranked #3 on two of them, #2 on nine of them, and #1 on eight of them.

Just because the poster doesn't have 5,000 posts talking about what they like (whether music, politics, or sports) doesn't mean they didn't vote.

Can we get the full list so we can see all the albums with 3 points that SHOULD have been number one if only everyone else had good taste?

shmoo, will you include # of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place votes received with the full list? that would be awesome.

No, because I had to do it manually just now with ctrl-F.

I'm curious to know if sensei has even heard this album, considering nearly all the words he uses in the blurb he's also pasted into other posts over the past week.

Do you seriously think I would have asked sensei to write a blurb?

Maybe I should have. It might actually have been funny as opposed to this last minute cut-and-past job.

Inspired even. It cracked up about it this morning when I was reading it.

Almost as good as "melissa"

That occurred to me after I had posted. As often is the case.

Because people apparently hate her.

Although I had it at #1 and I know frosted and katie both had it high on their lists too.

To me it's more like the goat getting a handjob from a drunk Mother Mary lawn statue.

I think the only one I had on my top 20 list was Band Of Horses.

Anyone got a recap of what the top 20 was?

Shmoo's gonna post it all tomorrow. But in the meantime you can search for "2006 Shmoo Poll Results" and all 7 threads will come up.
