U2, REM, Deerhoof are all spot on.

I'll throw out Tupac, .
Notorious B.I.G.
I never understood why people made such a big deal about him.

HAVE YOU HEARD READY TO DIE!?!!??!

Rap is all about finding new and unique ways to make the same themes resonate, and lines like 'Fuck the World, Fuck my Moms and my Girl, my Life is played out like a jheri curl, I'm Ready to Die" and "My Momma got cancer in her breast, don't ask me why I'm motherfucking stressed, shit done changed" are about as tight as you can get. Pluse, the beats are all hott, and the only exception I think you can find to this album is raggedy ass, busta ass, sorry as Puffy riding Big's jock on the background of every track. If this ever gets remastered, I hope they take that shit off.

This album may or may not have had a lot to do with me not driving my car into on coming traffic or taking a steel-jacketed anti-depressant to the back of the head in 1997.

I just played RTD for the first time in about a year and it's aged remarkably well. Every damn verse on that album is sick and the beats are some of the best of that decade.

I'm actually thinking about buying the remastered version today with the bonus tracks.

beware that the one sample they were sued over is probably removed.

as for Ready to Die, much like Big L i think Biggie is more talented than that album is awesome. Something about that album prevents me from listening all the way through. But the great songs are easily some of the best songs ever made in any genre.

i've never understood even a little bit the critical aclaim and genre launching tag associated with "blue lines"

i find the whole album pretty forgetable, and my favorite song on there is a faithful cover song. i don't hate it, but i never understand how someone could hear it and get excited about what they were listening to.

Pavement-I'll just put on The Fall, thank you.

:wanker: A most tired comparison. (And confounding too, except perhaps for "Two States" and some of that early stuff compiled on Westing ).

it's not a tired comparison for most of Slanted (conduit for sale is essentially a cover song with different lyrics) but after that they went in a very different direction.

Is it because you have to go beat off during the interlude, then it's naptime?

Old Stuff:
Pink Floyd
Led Zep
Captain Beefheart

New/er Stuff
My Bloody Valentine

I have a whole BIG shitload of artists that i would file under the "i'm coming around on them" list, including Bob Dylan and Ted Leo

I have another BIG list of bands that i wouldn't say i don't like them, but i wouldn't ever buy any of their albums and if my wife would pop one of HER cds in the player i wouldn't vomit, e.g. 80s REM, 80s U2, stuff like the Strokes and Franz Ferdinand...

Yes on Doors, Pistols, Modest Mouse, Pavement.

Whoever doesn't like blur on the basis of Parklife should check out some other stuff - depending on your other tastes. Without more info, I vote Think Tank, which was startlingly good for a band I had assumed would disappear, unmissed.
