not too much extra to add to this, but I would have bit the Pink Album by SDRE on this list as well as Diary. Fuck HIFTBSO.

There's pretty much nothing on this page I can dispute. I think they nailed it.

I will add these to the list, though:

(1) I don't consider 1/2 of the albums in this thread to be emo (even under an expansive definition).

(2) Nobody has mentioned the greatest (and pioneering) emo album yet:

i remember when sunny day realestate came out i thought they were a crappy version of superchunk.

they probably sound nothing alike, but that's what my 19 year old ears thought.

As the the self proclaimed 'oldest living emo fan', I have to agree alot of the bands you guys listed are not emo. I mean the Buzzcocks are clearly not emo and neither is Modest Mouse. Seriously, you guys are reaching.
Some of my standards are;
Taking Back Sunday
Jimmie Eat World
The Format
The Jealous Sound (ex Knapsack frontman)
Plain White T's
Thursday
Motion City Soundtrack
Before Braiile
At the Drive in
Sparta

there are many more, those are just off the top of my head

I've only heard one Motion City Soundtrack album, but it didn't sound like emo to me. It was pretty much pure hi-octane pop-punk.

I pretty sure both Radcliffe and myself were being facetious in a "this stuff is better than that stuff" way.

I don't see how different MM is in sound or lyrical themes than a band like 764-HERO, yet the latter is generally accepted in a lot of emo convos.

Uh yeah. The point was that emo has always been an unclassifiable genre because its allegedly distinguishing traits are shared by a wide variety of non-emo bands.

And any criteria you use to delineate an emo band, I'll put money down that the Buzzcocks not only meet that criteria, but are also deliver the best songs.

I see current emo defined as "when the guy starts singing his voice is both horribly abrasive and non-descriptly juvenile sounding."

agree, especially old modest mouse. tell me how "trailer trash" doesn't qualify, musically or lyrically.
