Going with Drums and Guns....I'm hoping to be way ahead of the curve here.

I really like the new one. I think its the most challenging record they've made to date. And not just in a useless unenjoyable genre exercise way. After seeing these songs played a few times in the last year I'm really surprised at how they've decided to put them down on record. They're infinitely darker and more intimate. And say what you will of Fridmann, but I think the choices made in the recording of this album are really interesting and vastly different than the epic pop course he pursued on The GReat Destroyer.

that being said, I still think Things We Lost in the Fire is my alltime favorite.

Things We Lost in the Fire followed by The Great Destroyer. Actually, those are the only ones I've listened to.

And I'd like to hear how these songs sound live.

It's true though: Low is sounding more and more like a studio band; they had such a live, definitive, deep sound. But they carried the weight of it, and thought themselves trapped. "Drums and Guns" is a bit of a return to that mood, but it's too glossy for me. There are several good songs on it, kind of vignettes.

Finally listened to Drums and Guns and I gotta agree that it is a bit of a return back to the mood of Low that I really got into a few years back with The Curtain Hits the Cast. They aren't going for the loud, bombastic sound on this one.

I'm not sure I see the "glossy" production thus far though.

How about The Curtain sounds like it's recorded with instruments, and Drums and Guns sounds like it was abstracted from instruments by some disconnected third party. The Curtain, or rather other earlier stuff like Secret Name and Long Division, is much heavier than this new record.

Drums and Guns tends to have more electronic blips, white noises and organs rather than drums, guitar and bass, but to me that is different than glossy production.

I agree that it's a bit of a different sound - especially from their last two mediocre outings - but I think its an interesting direction.

Alright. "Glossy" was meant as a relative term.

I'd like to cite "Don't Understand" from Secret Name as an example of how much better they did what they or Fridmann are trying to do here back then.

I'm not denying that they did it better in the past (I said as much earlier in the thread), its simply a welcome change for me from their past two mostly mediocre albums.

In the Fishtank is great.

I still don't have the Christmas EP. I've even bough it for someone else, but I don't have it on any format. :(

I'm still partial to Long Division... the first one I heard.

Someone told me yesterday that Low are practicing Mormons. I know I shouldn't be so closed-minded and intolerant, but if this is true I'll listen to their music differently... with less interest. The Mitt Romney disease.

"Last Snowstorm of the Year" I guess off "Great Destroyer" would fit wonderfully on that EP.

This thread is starting to repeat itself. Low is making a point of not repeating itself.

Anybody pick up Drums and Guns and get the bonus 7"?

The A side is a soul/funk version of "Hatchet" that's pretty awesome. I might like it better than anything on the actual album.
