Adding insult to injury. Just now starting to make national news. Called french cajuns coonasses in a derogatory way on tape. He then blamed it on someone else.

is there a non-derogatory way to refer to someone as a coonass?

Yes. Cajun. Acadian.

Coonass comes from the french word Coonasse, which loosely translated means prosititue who hasn't been checked by the doctor in some time.

It was a term to put down the Cajuns not unlike Nigger. The Cajuns with their laid back attitude took the term and revealed in it like modern day african americans and often now use it to laugh at themselves. But many are not comfortable with "outsiders" using the term.

I think he meant clean as not scandalous like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. Ultimately, Biden was trying to compliment. Saban was not.

Tanner, can you verify if you've heard anything about the comments below. I read it on a message board but I think it's a fake. There is no way he would say this. I figured LSU people would be in an uproar if this was true. The article is supposedly from the Birmingham news and quoting him from a radio show.

I'm sure the SEC hasn't changed much over the past two seasons. I mean Mississippi State is still funding scholarships by collecting pop bottles and aluminum cans along the highways," said Saban, half jokingly Friday afternoon. "Auburn, our motto --'Where most coaches are fired' -- is still
in effect."

"LSU was nothing before I arrived. Academically, athletically, physical plant, nothing. I made LSU. I was LSU. Their current success is solely due to my recruits. Coach Miles, while a fine man, does not fill my shoes, fit my desk, or cast a taller shadow. Our coaching staff is superior to anything in Baton Rouge. We will go into Louisiana an take each and every player we want. LSU will not, nor can not stop me. Mark my words."
Finebaum point blank asked Saban if those comments mean LSU is a bigger foe than Auburn, a team that has dominated the Crimson Tide in recent years.

Supposedly, it's true and everyone is in an uproar. That's okay with me. One thing you don't want to do is stir the bees nest and I already feel for the Bama fans when they have to come to Baton Rouge. If it's a night game, we might burn down the team bus. No amount of money will keep out of Tiger Stadium for that game.

As I said initially: crucifixion at the 50 yd. line.

I've seen him speak at several clinics, and he's always come across as a smug prick. I have no trouble believing that he said that stuff.

Don't certain people down there kinda celebrate the term "coonass"?

I just remember my brother having a "Coonass Militia" patch or cap or something.

Defintely. And Coonasses don't have a problem being the butt of the joke if you they're laughing with you. It' s when you're an outsider and only laughing at them that it becomes a problem.

I know this is an attempt at humor, but one the other theory of orgins is that it is American meaning deriving from Coon's Ass or in another words Ass of a Black Person meaning that cajuns were of lower class than Southern Blacks.

But since you're a dot head, I don't take offense.

Being the safe minority, and threatening to no one, the whole thing is silly to me. A slur is either a slur or it isn't, you know what I mean? And where did coon fome from anyways? I've always wondered.

and I love cajun food. I mean coonass food. And i love nigger food. I mean, coon food? Oh, i meant soulfood.

I just like food.

Sincerely,
your resident sand nigger.

I know exactly what you mean. It's all about intent and use.

Did Biden's '08 presidential candidacy even last 24 hours? Heck, in '88 he at least managed to keep it going for a couple of month before all the plagiarism stuff hit. If only he was more...articulate.

Saban under fire for derogatory remark
Tide coach says he doesn't condone ethnic slur about Cajuns
The Associated Press
Updated: 7:29 p.m. ET Jan 31, 2007

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - As an audiotape spread on the Internet, Alabama coach Nick Saban acknowledged Wednesday using a phrase considered derogatory to Cajuns but said he doesn’t condone such language and merely was repeating something a friend told him.

Saban, a former LSU and Miami Dolphins coach, used an ethnic slur Jan. 3 while telling Florida reporters in Tuscaloosa an anecdote about an LSU fan’s angry reaction to his hiring.

When asked about the LSU fans’ reaction, Saban related a phone call from a friend on the LSU board of trustees, whom he did not name. In what seemed to be an attempt at humor, Saban told of the friend’s encounter with an LSU fan, who speaks in a Cajun dialect.

“He was walking down the street yesterday before the Sugar Bowl,” Saban said on the taped comments. “He calls me. There was a guy working in the ditch, one of those coonass guys that talk funny.

“I can’t talk like them, but he can. Most people in Louisiana can.”

Continuing to tell the story, Saban then quoted the worker’s vulgar comment about Saban going to Alabama.

Saban, in a statement Wednesday, said the word “can be taken as derogatory by some people.”

“Those comments need to be placed in the proper context, so as to understand the meaning of what was said,” Saban said. “The words were used in paraphrasing a story told to me by a friend. I was simply using the same wording used by the person who told me the story.

“The term in question is not language that I use or condone, and I can understand how some would take offense. However, I think it must be noted that those comments were made ‘off the record’ and the words merely reflected an anecdote that was told to me using that language.”

Warren Perrin, president of the Council for Development of French in Louisiana, said the term is “highly offensive.”

“I routinely state that the use of that term is highly offensive to descendants of Acadians, who are commonly referred to as Cajuns,” Perrin said.

Alabama spokeswoman Deborah Lane said the university had no comment beyond Saban’s statement.
