"The High-Def format wars finally have yardstick against which to measure who's winning with the first public release of VideoScan sales figures for both HD DVD and Blu-ray. The first two weeks worth of data seem to back up what many predicted — that the Blu-ray enabled PS3 is helping Sony quickly close the gap with HD DVD, with almost three Blu-ray discs sold for every one HD DVD during the first week of January. HD DVD still leads in overall discs sold since inception, but that lead looks to be quickly dwindling. While they do show a trend, the results from VideoScan are still fairly vague. Why are consumers being denied the information they need to make a considered choice?"

Probably won't become an issue until the first wave of consumer-friendly priced players are on the market.

The porn industry chose HD DVD over blue-ray, so it looks like that could be a huge factor.

They just released a hybrid player that plays both formats for $1200. Sure, its expensive, but the fact that the player was announced just a few weeks ago and is now available makes me think that it will be "affordable" by the end of the year.

As far as HDTV's, I think more people have them than you know. Everyone I know has an HDTV now (they really aren't THAT expensive), with several buying them within the past 2 months. Most have bought a 1080P, too.

I think next xmas, the HDtv market will reach full potential. Look at how long it takes for people to accept a changeover, not to mention one that is so short after the "mom and pops" have accepted DVD even.

Unless a highly-rated, reasonably-priced PC optical drive comes out that plays out, I'll sit this one both. By that time, 7.1 sound-cards and A/V receivers will have dropped in price as well.

you sir are absolutely right. blue-ray will lose the war, and this is one of the biggest reasons. this is exactly what happened with betamax and VHS: the folks who developed betamax (sony again?) would not allow the standard to be licensed for "adult entertainment", and the pure volume of VHS availability of the same subject made video rental stores carry much more VHS, and let to more widespread adoption of VCR's. granted, the internet might have changed the playing field a little this time around, but the porn industry has been a trailblazer in new technology adoption, and if they chose HD DVD, my money is that blue ray will die a slow painful death.
