Cowboy in Sweden is my favorite followed closely by Requiem for A Lady. The Comp Dreaded Marco recommends is good, but only covers his MGM years (which includes most of the work with Nancy).

Some of his best are probably a bit difficult to find in stores. I've yet to be disappointed though so pickup whatever you can find.

As for proper albums, those 2 billy lists plus The Very Special World of Lee Hazlewood are my favorites.

I like the record he made with Ann Margaret quite a bit as well. The bonus track on the CD, "You Turn My Head Around" kills me everytime.

Didn't know whether or not he was still alive.

The first time I heard one of his songs it was Slowdive covering "Some Velvet Morning". :)

I thought that he was still kickin', & even doing a short tour of Europe (where he's resident, now (& has been for thirty-plus years)).

Did he die in the last two weeks?

No, I don't think he has died yet. He just released his last album, Cake or Death. He's got terminal renal cancer---knowing him, he could make it another year or two. Maybe not.

I'd love to see him in concert---don't think that's going to happen.

Prolly not. Unless you can convince your wife & kids that a trip to see an aged, dying rock n' roll producer in concert is really an educational, family vacation.

As is, either while I was in Spain, or just after I left, I think he played out in Denmark & other parts of Northern Europe with the High Llamas backing him. Wish I could have gotten to those.

No he lives in the states now, largely (read probably entirely) for medical reasons. I want to say he lives in Utah or Arizona. Its definitely a Non-CA southwestern state, and he travels weekly to get medical treatment. And Cake or Death was recorded mostly with him in serious pain. The drugs he takes for pain management f'ed up his voice so he'd stop taking them a day or two before going back in the studio. So this is definitely his last album.

It arrived in my mailbox today with 5 other cds...more thoughts coming soon after listening.

I got that new record a while ago and I would definitely not recommend picking it up to anybody. IT's mostly retreads of past material. I applaud the effort in making it but like his last couple of albums it pales in comparison to his earlier work.
