We watched the whole thing, and it really did suck.

CHEERS:
- The Police sounded good, even though Sting ain't hittin them high notes no more. Stuart and Andy were perfect as always. I don't care if they implode down the road, it'll be more interesting than most of what else is going on.
- John Mayer! I have this fear sometimes that good guitar is dead in popular music.. you can only hear so much Interpol-ish chittery guitar before you start to wonder. Mayer's got a fucking motor, and knows when to use it. <---Guitar Apologist.

JEERS:
- What the fuck, Chilli Peppers? Seriously. Take a cold, hard look at yourself. Dropping confetti doesn't make that song less terrible or remotely entertaining. Heyyyy yooo... garbage. Fucking awful garbage. Atleast John looks healthy - that made me smile.
- Eagles Tribute. Yeah, that band wasn't fit to hold Don Henley's jock, and something tells me he'd have told them so if he were sitting close enough to them. Aren't they a country band? Why for the love of god were they trying to do Eagles songs with les pauls and marshalls?! Plus dude is NOT a strong enough singer for that.

I should've been doing homework.

jt, ti, and that girl were a highlight. that was actually pretty cool.

but that "get a chance to sing with justin timberlake" thing was just a cheap attempt at "american idol", right? also, i think it was staged because the girl already had a monitor in her ear when they announced she won.

My wife openly called Shenanigans on that shit, early on. "What the fuck - what are we allegedly voting on? We haven't heard them sing?! This is retarded."

Plus they beat it to DEATH.

It was Rascall Flatts. Agreed on everything you said, BUT, you'd give your left nut to be a back up rhythm guitar player for them right now.

BTW, I barely watched any of this even though I normally do (I got sucked into the marathon of that America's Game series on the NFL Network), but the line of the night from what I saw was Ludacris thanking Oprah and Bill O--that ruled.

The guitarist is married to Tiffany Fallon though so score one for him:

Those two have been waging a war on "gangsta rap" in general and Luda in particular for the last two or three years. It was basically a "fuck you" that not only is his music embraced by thugs but also the mainstream honkies who vote for shit like Grammies.

What he said.

Todd, don't feel bad. I happen to think she's pretty great, especially the songs off her new album. The woman has amazing pipes.

It's not like you're saying Jessica Simpson is a great singer, because then yes we'd kick your ass all over the place.

They aren't bluegrass-ish at all. They are one of the biggest pop bands in the US. Their stuff is played on all white-bread radio formats. Pretty sure they were on of the highest grossing touring acts in 2006. Up there with The Stones, Kenny Chesney, et al.
The husband of a girl that works in my office runs FOH sound for Rascal Flatts. I stuck my foot in my mouth in front of her one day talking about how bad they suck.

Also, I really dug Carrie Underwood doing the Bob Wills tune "San Antonio Rose". It was cool to see big Ray Benson up there. (full disclosure: I book Asleep at the Wheel).

Other observations:
The Police were really tight. I thought they sounded great.

Smokey Robinson looked like a fucking wax figure. He had so much Botox running through him, he didn't blink once. And I think it's an indicator at how bad/good entertainment has gotten that Chris Brown had to do all of that other shit on stage because his song can't stand up to classics like "Tracks of My Tears" or "Hello".

Christina Aguleira tore the house down on that JB tribute. I hate her and I was truly impressed.

Exactly. Also, he's playing to sold out arenas, going multi-platinum, and touring the world.

Give me a banjo and some hair gel please.

That was the other thing I saw and thought it was cool as well.

TOTALLY. He jumped off a fucking trampoline... just sing, man. Just write a good song. -Though the step dancing intro was good.

The problem with this argument, as ever, is that it's a slippery slope (you don't want me posting pictures of every other garbage act that nets lotsa $$). I used to say the same thing to Ze Doktor fucking ten years ago... just because someone makes money does not mean I want to be them. I do not get excited by the prospect of standing in front of ten thousand people and playing shitty music. I DO get excited about standing in front of 40 people and playing something I think is extremely good.

But that's just me.

only watched the Police, even though I tivo'd the whole thing. Thanks for the highlights! Now I'll know where to fast forward.

as for the Police: I thought they did ok. With Sting's super blond spikey hair, I'm like "uh, is this Synchronicity era all over again?" The guy has aged well. Andy on the other hand? Hmm, not so much. Stewart looked great, and glad to see that crazy shag of hair behind the drum kit.

Oddly enough, Kevin can hit the high notes better than Sting these days.

They are incredibly nice folks though I have worked with them on two concerts in the last three years. The only problem we had with them was when they dropped about six inches worth of confetti on the ground during their last gig here. I bet I met that guy who handles the FOH stuff for them.

Copeland is one of the great drummers... seeing him live I'd forgotten who tasteful and skillful he is... jazzy but simple.

My college roommate grew up with him in Beirut... met him once and he seemed like the most unaffected and blanced person....

Sting looked great, but the voice is starting to go.

RCP... once upon a time they weren't embarassing. Kiedis is undoubtably the worse singer (live) ever for a band of this popularity... I can't think of any who even come close to be as bad as he is.

Billy Corgan and Dave Grohl are both pretty shitty live singers.

Just think of a newborn baby crying for it's mother's milk when you hear him sing. That's what I hear.

And speaking of Mother's Milk, I can't believe that RHCP were once my favorite band in the world. Damn, that's kinda embarassing.

Who does "Jesus Take the Wheel"?

That song has to be the most unintentionally hilarious song in years. It's like something out of top-notch satire.
