I rarely listen to them anymore but was in the burbs Thursday afternoon and driving between 2 stops I had to make. I suppose I'm sort of impressed.

Impressed that XRT is playing something good?

or

Sad because XRT has raped the indie music world and taken what it wants, turning our favorite bands into the favorite bands of middle aged people (i.e. my parents)?

I don't think KRNU has gotten into these guys yet, which is a shame. Everything that I have heard sounds wonderful.

I can also see why middle aged people would love these guys, plus I'm getting closer and closer to being middle aged, so I won't bag on those people.

I suppose I'm surprised/impressed because that track's style is definitely not traditional WXRT new music fare. Don't get me wrong: while I've grown tired of WXRT's overall style they do still add/play lots of artists that other stations/formats leave behind.

It's like a few years ago when they started playing Snow Patrol. Out of the blue they are suddenly playing Snow Patrol. And at the end of a set you hear a 50+ year old DJ like Marker or Hemmert say, "That was Melissa Etheridge, before that Snow Patrol, Thin Lizzy and John Mellencamp." It seemed out of place - all these dinosaurs/XRT staples surrounding this one new track by a new band. Am I suddenly going to re-like XRT and listen more because between all the old crap they toss in this one new track? Hardly. That's why it's odd to me.

Then again, the last few times I've dipped into them I've heard some different new things. Maybe they're paying more attention to the Sound Opinions forum.

as the on-air talent for xrt gets worse (aside from the djs who've been there forever), the music seems to get better.

there's one guy whose voice is barely good enough for a daytime wluw program, but i always hear good stuff when he's on. then again, it's usually the middle of the night when the bulk of xrt listeners are probably asleep.

Fuck I hate that song. Glad to hear they'll be annoying people on a larger scale though.

They played the same song at the end of "How I Met Your Mother" a few weeks back too.

That station has an unhealthy fixation with all things Petty and Mellencamp.

That said, Lynn Bremer (sp?) is one of the best host voices I've ever heard.

Well, that for sure spells an offer from PFM Fest or Lollapalooza, if they both aren't already being entertained.

I just expect him to hate it and if he doesn't make a derisive comment about some song or album then I start thinking someone hijacked his account.

Ken Sumka? I've had a "Best of '05" disc from him sitting on my desk for ages. I can't recall the names of the other late-night people.

must suck to have cooler parents than you.

that aside: xrt jumped the shark when they expanded their on air time beyond 10pm to 7am.
