One of my hobbies during my commute is peeking at other people's iPods, Rios, etc. Most people seem to have theirs on shuffle and it's usually the same music they could hear if they had a Walkman with FM radio. But that's beside the point.

I've noticed an overwhelming number of people who seem to just throw on whatever they've downloaded, regardless of file name. For instance, yesterday I saw "Track 7" on a display. Neither album nor artist were listed. How could they know what song it was?

I'm an extreme case, but everything on my iPod is in perfect order. I know exactly where to find any song. So where do you fall?

I go through phases and stages on this. I TRY to keep it straight, but I am really lazy, and really stupid.

All my digital audio is tagged with artist/album/titlle/track/year. Most have genre and comment.

I'm using Rockbox on my iPod, which means I can copy files to the iPod hard drive directly. For the moment, the folder are listed by "artist - year - album" then "track - title."

I'm planning to archive my CD collection in FLAC and use either Vorbis or Nero AAC (instead of MP3) for listening, but that's probably a different thread.

I'm not totally OCD about it but I have spent a lot of time organizing the artist names and making sure individuals are listed Last Name, First Name instead of the other way around like iTunes defaults to. I'd like to do more organizing but don't have the time.

OCD? can't answer unless i know what this is, although i'm guess it means "ultra-anal-retentive", which i'd vote for.

obsessive compulsive disorder, even though i suppose it would be more accurate to say it's obsessive compulsive personality disorder. it's basically meticulous attention to detail, lists, rules, etc.

then i vote OCD, although some of my miscellaneous downloads aren't perfect, but i'm going through all those and re-downloading anything < 192kps, fixing tags and deleting the old imperfect ones.

I'm also two milk cartons away from reripping all my cds. Some where good hi-vbr some were 192kps and a limited few were 160kps. Redoing them all mp3-new, lame, V2-ish hi-vbr. Also redoing the various artist tags so that the song & title show up propa.

I've been at the reripping process for almost a year now. my dvd burner (where i burn mp3 backups) died in october so this whole thing was delayed 2 months while i waited for an expected xmas present. ;)

most of my stuff lists artist/song, sometimes album, but there are a few that get in there with no info, which irritates me when I'm working out, hear a great song, look to see what it is, and can't see it.

I have OCD with my ipod so much, that if I don't have ALL the album tracks, it probably will not be going onto my ipod. Singular tracks are only put on there if they are a single or an EP of some sort.

I've peeked at others ipods/itunes as well, and sometimes the disorganization is a bit overwhelming.

mostly organized....artist/album/song title for everything....most things sorted by genre and subgenre...the system breaks down a bit for artists that I was too lazy to pick a genre for...and I have a few bootleg compilations (mostly brazilian soul ones) where even though i bought the physical cd, it comes with no track listing and ocd software doesn't recognize the song.

Im not really sorted by genre, but everything I have is in its own album fodler with the name "Artist - Album" and each song "Artist - (Track) Song" and I couldnt function otherwise.

Oh yeah, and the album art thing too, as mentioned above.

I guess that makes me OCD

Totally organized. All artists are organized by last name, first, then the albums are listed with the year in parentheses (if it's a bootleg, it gets the full date but it must be year/month/date so that it falls under the album that preceeded it. MUST!) The only exception to the date rule is collections, since they span a large period of time, but I've actually made exceptions to the exceptions when I've felt it necessary to break up an artist's output with a couple of compilations.

Something for you OCD freaks like me: I have also started getting my own damned artwork because I just found out the hard way that letting Itunes find it for you is a great way to lose it when you reinstall Windows. So every time I rip a disc, I just go grab the artwork off Amazon or wherever and add it in Itunes. Anything that you added artwork to retains artwork, anything Itunes handles the artwork for gets hidden in some mysterious database that apparently can't be moved - I moved the databases that contain all the info for my 150gb library because I refuse to rebuild it unless absolutely necessary and it didn't bring the artwork with it. Stupid Itunes.

I am EXTREMELY OCD about my MP3 organization, including TEH iPAWD. Thank Jebus for such wonderful tools as MP3 Tag Studio!

Another vote for OCD here. All albums are listed like:

[1999] ...Baby One More Time
[2001] Oops I Did It Again
[2003] Britney

so they all pop up in order. werd.

I have the artist, album, and track name all organized. But now, the GENRE is really pissing me off. Why didn't I put more thought into this when I was ripping all these discs?
