funny story

Quote:
In addition to its horking-MC blind item, today's edition of Ben Widdicombe's Gatecrasher also has this tidbit about an intern uprising at Jive:

And the moral of the story is: If you're ripping off your own record label for $20,000 worth of pilfered CDs, don't make your interns do all the work selling it on eBay - they might rat you out.

That was the fate of one hapless Jive Records executive assistant who was recently canned for his inventive side business.

"He was selling pre-release Justin Timberlake albums for $50 a pop," laughs our snitch. "And he was using the Jive mailroom to send them out."

But the interns didn't love having to do the shipping themselves.

"They sent an E-mail to Jive president Barry Weiss from an anonymous E-mail account, InternsArePeopleToo@[redact- ed], and copied every vice president to tell them they were 'fired up.'"

The executive assistant, however, was just fired.

There are many things to love about this story--who knew that copies of albums given out to label employees needed to be watermarked? (cough, cough)--but it makes us wonder about other sordid dealings interns have seen, and other ways they've tried to rise up against their non-paying masters. If you're a music-biz intern, or intern emeritus, with a tale to tell, feel free to send your sabotage stories to us. We'll reprint them anonymously, allowing you to privately revel in your refracted glory.

I sent 3 bags of Beggars/4ad promos to myself at school...

I sold many copies of badly drawn boy/super furry/delgados records to other music.

Yeah, I don't think I would have ever tried selling promo albums I snagged when I did all the CMj polling and shit like that at the University of South Dakota radio station.
I used to snag all the good records we weren't adding to the rotation or that were going to be given away as prizes, but I would have never sold them. I either kept them for myself or gave them to friends who would put it to much better use than a crappy radio station you could barely hear off campus.

Free CDs are the best I've found.
