I'm digging the shit out of this upon first listen.

For fans of Lucinda Williams, EmmyLou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Gillian Welch.

Great singer-songwriter stuff with country flair. I haven't heard a bad song yet. Fantastic voice.

Not for everyone but any fans of this genre should do themselves a favor.

[sigh] "Heavenly Day," "No Bad News," and "Up To The Mountain" completely floored me when I heard them on NPR's site, and I bought the album thinking it was basically stuff along those lines, but then there's stuff like "Burgundy Shoes" on there that sounds like it should be backing some Hallmark Movie of the Week or something. Unfortunately, there's less of the soulful, bluesy stuff that NPR focused on than the adult contemporary stuff that I just cannot abide by. I'd take a whole album of stuff like the three I mentioned above - does she get better than this on her earlier albums, ie, no schlocky stuff?

So, Living With Ghosts is essentially a disc of demos that is just phenomenal. Probably in my top ten for the 90's and Flaming Red is a little more accessible, but still edgy. I think she lost a lot of the edge after that and her most recent albums havent been nearly as important to me, although I think she is one of the best female songwriters working today.
