I had cassettes as a toddler and CD's as a child so I've never actually owned any vinyl. Maybe a Raffi record or two when I was very young but I don't know.

And my parents sold off their record players to pay for the speakers to go with their new cd player when I was a kid. So I never bothered with vinyl.

But, as a birthday present from my aunt, I was given:

Hatful Of Hollow and The Head On The Door

Not a bad start. Now I just have to look into buying a record player. I've checked yard sales in the past with no luck.

i was at a record store last month when a mother and daughter walked in for seemingly no reason. i was digging for 45s while coughing up a lung in the dregs of this moldy shop and heard the mother tell the owner, "my daughter's never seen a record." i thought, "oh, it's a little kid." i looked up. she had to have been at least 16.

Wow, this is impossible for me to relate to. Vinyl is great, but a lot more work if you want to get a nice clean sound out of it.

Number one reason I never had any interest in vinyl before.

If I can't take it with me to listen to when I'm walking around or on the bus, then it seemed like a waste of money. And I suppose I could burn it to a cd like stated above. But why not just buy the cd then?

Really, I do love vinyl, but if I hadn't grown up with it, I can't imagine I would care about having a turntable.

i totally understand why people don't care for vinyl - accessibility. but the serious vinyl buyer cares about product, art, and ownership of something pure instead of where they can listen to it. sure, i can download the mp3 of something from a rare 45rpm, but it's special owning that piece of work too. if you don't get it, you might as well just keep collecting CDs. and there's nothing wrong with that for a lot of people.

I have one of these barely used http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=800390

It works amazing and I'd love to sell it for $115 (shipping to you included, needle included too)

I'm moving in a few months and trying to minimize my possessions
and this seems like the type of thing I can live without until I know I'm staying put for a while

Let me know if you're at all interested. Its bad ass, I just don't use it enough at the moment.

maybe being forced to sit and listen will be good for you.

Plus vinyl sounds better than anything else on the market.

Eventually save up for a real turntable.

I had a new 180 g vinyl version of Rum, Sodomy, and The Lash waiting for me the other day when I got back from Taiwan- it might not make a believer out of EVERYONE who wanders through my house, but I'd like to think it would convince a bunch of them.

when i was young, my mom had this huge-ass, length of the whole wall tv, radio tuner, record player. that's been my only real exposure. my first music was bought on cassette.

i know vinyl's supposed to offer better sound quality, but i've never found it viable for the above reasons.

however, i have like 3 or 4 records that i hope will be valuable as collector's items someday. doubtful though.

yeah, and she was probably in her early 20s. i can never tell anymore. i'm also not sure that was true. i think she just meant the girl had never seen a record store with only vinyl. still...

They just keep looking younger and younger, don't they. Every time I walk in a bar these days I look around and can't believe they are serving drinks to all those kids wandering around.
