So, I want to get a laptop, and pretty much use it as a replacement for my desktop computer (I plan on buy a several hundred gig external drive too).

Anyway, I just got a Dell catalogue in the mail, and some deals are incredibly good.

Problem is, I have no idea what the good "notebooks" are that are on the market these days.

Does anyone here use one, and do you like it? And if it's Dell, what model? Blah blah blah. I know we have some techies here, so hook it up, please.

I just got an imac not too long ago. It works just fine though, despite the price difference, I'd probably go with a Power MAC. Then again, seeing as you're looking at a Dell cataolgue, you might not be going the apple way...

I was shopping a while back, but I diverted the cash elsewhere, but as soon as I reacquire it, I'm definitely buying an IBM ThinkPad.

Everyone I've talked to says that they are well worth the extra money.

i used two dell inspiron models in college. i enjoyed them, for the most part. now my sister has their latest and likes it. (i've moved onto a desktop for now.) i take a lot of trips and liked being able to have the laptop, especially for the music. i also write a lot when i'm away, so the laptop was pretty functional. my biggest complaint, though, is with the power cords. i guess i just put a lot of wear and tear on them and they broke down. i can't explain it. other than that, i was pleased with dell's notebooks and am looking forward to again having one.

i just bought a Sager 3790. it's sweet, and while it's a tad heavier than i would like, i couldn't get the features that i wanted in an ultraportable.

What features are those? And about how heavy is it? Would it kill my back carrying it in my backpack on a daily basis?

it's ~6lbs, and the main feature that i wanted was a 128mb video card. it doesn't kill me, but i'm not exactly carrying a bunch of textbooks with it.
