Why? Because I'm preachy? ;)
I need to go back and listen to the CD, Scott... do you have any protest-type songs? How do you feel about writing them?

How do any of the songwriters on the board feel about writing protest songs? You got any? Let's hear them, if you feel like sharing.

I agree, but even "Imagine" is starting to sound preachy.
Maybe it's overexposure?

not preachy, just not likely to find the negative spin on someone that seems like a good thing.

i don't have any protest songs, i have a few societal observations generally focused on how i wish i lived my life better. "climb the ladder" "pretty good" and "belly of the beast" fit that description from the album you have. but i wouldn't call any of them "protest" or even "political" songs.

i have a hard time writing real protest songs because i'm not much of a protesty guy. I don't think i understand enough of how the world works to comment on it outside of my own perspective.

I think you hit it dead-on – why it's so damn hard to write a good, effective protest song that doesn't sound preachy. For most of us, tsa songwriters, the best we can do is look into ourselves, write about what we see, and hope that others can relate. If there's a larger message there, all the better.

Nothing but respect for those who can pull it off.

Imagine IS preachy, and has always sounded that way. But it's a good song. Also, pretty much everything John Lennon wrote post-Beatles was at least a little political.

Because protesting, by nature, is frowning upon the current state of affairs and suggesting change. To assume a stance like that normally requires an 'I know better' position, and to deviate from that is really hard especially when one is attached to the subject matter. Pulling it off requires taking a difference stance such as 'What if xxx?' (Imagine), 'Let's talk about how to fix it' (What's Goin On), or even 'damn, this shit is really hard to deal with.' (Dress Blues)

With another unity song

the first few times i heard this song i thought he was yelling "evolution's got a cock" at the breakdown.

but as an example of one that kind of sucks: "road to peace" off the new tom waits album. current events are not his strong suit.

You truly are wise beyond your years, Palillo de los Pescado. Brilliant observation, Scott.
