I've pretty much lived politics the past week, at least the small-town media version. I'm exhausted. I'm horrified. I'm angry. Baffled. And scared for our country.

Can't do a frickin' thing about it but stew in frustration while the Bush celebrants all around me rub it in.

I need an incredible, majestic, life-affirming, truly beautiful album to listen to. Something to remind me that there's still trees and fields and sunshine and unsullied lovliness in the world. Something I can listen to with headphones and the lights off.

Know of one?

I just bought it a couple days ago and it would seem to fit this catagory.

Maybe someone could confirm that or not.

Mirah- You Think It's Like This But Really It's Like This

Can't explain how soothing, pleasing, and happy-making this album is.

Been playing The Flaming Stars Sunset & Void from 2002 over and over lately. Really grown on me. I think AMG said something like a combination of Velvet Underground and Ennio Morricone, and it does have a little of that spaghetti western sound in some of the songs like another favorite of mine, Calexico. And the singer does sound a little like Lou Reed at times, but maybe more like Nick Cave or especially Stuart Staples from Tindersticks or the guy from Calla. Very cool find. If you do downloads, go here and listen to the first two songs from the album, "A Little Bit Like You" and "Cash 22", for a good taste (and let me know what you think). They've got a new one coming out soon that's supposed to be very good too.

Yo La Tengo's And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out is a mellow record that continues to astound me with how good it is.

I'll second both the Mum and Explosions in the Sky records, but will put forth my full endorsement for the following:

Spiritualized - Lazer Guided Melodies

Shmoo,

I couldn't agree with you more. I love that album.

Lorax,

What is that? I dig the cover art.

I'm guessing Spiritualized - Lazer Guided Melodies for some reason.
