I also made this mix a while back. The second half is probably not quite what you're looking for, but oh well. If I had a copy put together, I would upload it. I think it died in the harddrive fire of aught-five, though.

can you send me this, cory... or up it at least? I'll be your best friend. ;)

I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend the 2nd and 3rd volumes of The Complete Stax-Volt Singles box sets. As far as I'm concerned, those are the Rosetta Stone of '70s Soul and Funk.

Oh, yeah...I almost forgot!

Give my two "Fracsploitation!" shows a listen, Eric. Definitely in the wheelhouse of what you are seeking:

So I'm listening to a Young-Holt Unlimited compilation and I finally discovered who does "Soulful Strut" (as well as its title).

I'll probably forget by Memorial Day.

I suppose you did, at least technically speaking. And while those comps look good, saying you have a couple of good comps and posting the track listing that lists 1 song by him out of 24 songs on the comps isn't really the same as highly recommending the guy.

Two of my favorite songs lately have been Freddie Scott's Are You Lonely For Me Baby, and Linda Jones' What Can I Do (Without You). I've also been going through an Ike & Tina Turner thing.

...but that's 60's stuff, so...

Even though he straddles into the late 1960s, I'm also gonna throw out William Bell.

Whoa, that Baby Huey album is awesome!!

What about Earth, Wind & Fire and Chic? I always hear how they're these great important bands, but... I don't know.

Feedback time (only those I heard):

billy g Wrote:
Some of these might be late 60's:

Curtis Mayfield (Any but esp. "Superfly" & S/T) Have Superfly, but Curtis! sounds good too
Donny Hathaway (Any but esp. "Everything is Everything" & "Extension of a Man") Need to listen to each again
Gil Scott Heron (Any but esp. "Pieces of A Man") Great, bought it
Eugene McDaniels "Headless Heroes of the Apocolypse"/"Outlaw" Sounds good, need more listening. Not what I expected
Baby Huey "The Living Legend: The Baby Huey Story" Awesome, bought it!
Lots of Good Aretha Franklin stuff from the early 70's well, duh
Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul not sure if I found the right thing, it was called They Want Funky Music and was decent
Isaac Hayes "Hot Buttered Soul"/"Shaft"/"Black Moses" Hot Buttered Soul was good, though the tracks are all really long (also not '70s), Shaft was okay, mostly instrumental score tracks, Black Moses very long and seems like mostly covers, gets repetitive. Downtempo really loves sampling this guy, though, huh?
More JB: "The Payback"/"Hell" What can I say, really? Damn good.
LeRoy Hutson - S/T Not really my thing
The Meters - any of the early albums Listened to their best of. Good stuff, but I think I prefer vocals.
Joe Bataan - anything Listened to Riot!, pretty good, but Latin flavor not what I expected
The Watts 103rd Street Rhythmn Band - anything and everything sounds like some good stuff, requires more listens
Jackson Sisters S/T mp3s sound pretty good
Isley Brothers "3x3" funky, but I don't love it

I also purchased Shuggie Otis' Inspiration Information and (not '70s) Aretha's Lady Soul.

Earth Wind and Fire sound amazing when you have a head full of cocaine.

For 70s soul/funk have we skipped over Ike and Tina Turner? Their Nutbush City Limits disc is absolutely fantastic. The title track alone is worth the price of admission.

i was motivated to pick up a few Meters albums thanks to this thread. i really dig their early instrumental albums + the one with vocals i heard, cabbage alley, is really good as well.

i also see that sly & the family stone's late 60's - mid 70's albums are getting the re-ish/bonus track treatment on 04/27, so i'm gonna finally pick up some of those. so far i know i want stand! and there's a riot goin' on...anyone recommend other albums from that period?

i like the meters, but they rip so much off form hip hop it's hard to take them seriously.
