So i bottled my latest monstrosity tonight: Mocha Java Oatmeal Stout. I figger that by the time it fully bottle conditions, it will be able to walk and talk. Right now I could probably put it on ice and call it iced coffee, and nobody would know the difference until they were drunk.

:drink:

Sweetness

:ironchef:

My buddy makes his own beer. He's quite good at it. I helped him one night. It was fun.

Your beer sounds like it would either be really good or really nasty. I can't tell which.

It's good & nasty.

Next on the brew list:

1) Raspberry Ale (springtime seasonal)
2) A light brown ale (ditto)
3) Ginger Ale (alcomoholic)
4) Mead
5) Grapefruit wine

these sound interesting...I didn't realize that you could brew an alcoholic ginger ale

and mead, have you ever actually had this?...I don't think I've even seen it before, just mentioned in books

and as for mead, yeah, i had a gang of friends that used to make mead when i was an undergrad - this will be my first time solo, but if you come down to sxsw, i'll show you what goes into brewing it.

Anywhere from sweet beer to fine white wine. It depends very much on what sort of honey you use, what sort of yeast you use, whether you sweeten or spice it . . . mead is older than wine, it's truly old school.

I've had meads that were like beers - chuggable - and meads that really were probably as good as any riesling i've ever dumped down my barely-refined gullet.

Meads is good.

I'm really looking forward to doing some wines out of Texas fruits, though:
Austin Dewberries, elderberries, mustang grapes - i'm going to put a perennial fruiting bus section into my garden this year. Also we've got a little peach tree that will probably yield fruit, which i will then promptly ferment.

a good light ale can be as fast as 1 month from brewpot to drinkable.

this last stout I made i brewed DEC 29 and bottled tonight and will start drinking march 3rd

some wines take as short as 6 months from start to finish, some wines you want to age at least three years before you touch them.

And, slip a roofie in it, and you can pretend your Got-damned Zeus*.

I just tried Bellhaven the other day.
It was very nice.

Chuck D,

I have a brew kit that i have not used yet. I have the bottles saved up. Any chance you could hook me up with an easy recipe that is heavy on the hops (love my IPAs).

Mead is great, not something I can consume a whole lot of (depending on how sweet it is). But the mochal oatmeal stout is right up my alley. Move over Rogue/Samuel Smith, there's a new brewer in town!

That sounds delicious, Colin. I desperately want some of that raspberry ale.
