We should probably just kill this thread. I didn't bump it looking for a cheap and meanspirited laugh at daystar.* The truth of the matter is that I was in chatzy and no one else was there and I thought if I bumped something random people would assume that there was something going on in chatzy and come join me.

If we're on the topic of what has killed the board, I place the blame squarely on the widespread mediafire/sendspace/ysi/uploading. Music discussion has degenerated to "Gimme" or "YSIPLSKTHKS." Before the widespread electronic trading of files, we actually had to try to convince people with words to care about our latest music discovery or underappreciated act.

Likewise when turned onto something new, people were more appreciative and sharing of their own opinions rather than just posting "IT GOOG. Thx." Yes Virginia, YSI killed the board not the meanspiritedness of a few "bad" obners.

*That said, Daystar was weak sauce and I do find the fawning welcomes of her to be fairly humorous in retrospect

I wasn't targeting your bump, beeg -- it was just seeing the thread and remembering how much heat she took that got me doing a little overly dramatic soul-searching. I'm an admitted sap.

Point taken about killing the thread, as I've beaten the dead horse to such a pulp no equine coroner alive could proceed without requesting dental records.

WHEW! I was bracing for much, much worse. Of course, LooGAR still has yet to unleash his wrath, so my relief is premature.

top 10 things that killed the board

1. quite a few quality posters leaving
2. quite a few poor posters arriving
3. ysi - agree with billy g
4. chatzy - better to talk to people in a semi-live format
5. mandatory minimums
6. parents refusing to pay for the dsl line anymore until junior gets a job
7. a general lack of follow through

I'm as guilty of this as anyone much of the time, as you can personally attest to. Having a laugh at someone else's expense is easy, and I'm often too lazy to come up with something better.

One of the best things about the old CMJ board and the early days of Obner is we were a lot friendlier and more accepting. Our insatiable thirst for a laugh at any price has turned this into a pretty mean-spirited place more often than not.

And I had more than a small role in triggering that unfortunate transformation.

Nonsense. The thread quality on Obner has gone way the fuck down-hill. This precipitates folks either leaving because the fare is so gdf stultifying, or getting fed up and lashing out.

You want a safe audience that will embrace your piss-poor music collection or that will fawn over whatever dull-assed thread you start, or turn a blind eye and give you a shoulder to cry over your inability to craft a proper english sentence??? Then join a support group--if you can't handle a bit of rough and tumble with opinionated grownups, then stay in the kiddie pool.

If you're not already, you're gonna make a wonderful father someday.

Yeah! What's the point in just ignoring a thread about an album you don't like when you could go shit all over it and make fun of anyone who does like it instead?

My intent isn't to lecture or chastise others, so much as take a look at myself in the mirror and maybe start holding myself to a higher standard. This thread really got me thinking along these lines. Having been picked on so much as a kid (big shock, I know), I'm extra-sensitive to when it happens to others, yet also tend to be one of the first to join the bully mob. I guess it's similar to that whole theory about kids who were beaten by their parents growing up to beat their own kids.

I mean, it's one thing for those of us who enjoy it to go around kicking each other in the nuts for fun. LooGAR takes shots at Bloor, Bloor takes shots back at LooGAR, etc. But we cross the line when we gang up on people who aren't fighting back. DayStar had her quirks, to be sure, but she was a sweet kid who had no interest in exchanging verbal punches. It's just kind of a shame that we had to chase her off.

No doubt, Bob, but did you consider the fact that she might (gulp) have a life? And doesn't feel the need to post anymore on the board like us losers?

If that were the case, I think it would more likely manifest itself in the form of far fewer posts, rather than a complete evacuation. DayStar's really just one example, though. It just seems like the whole tone of Obner has changed compared to a year or two ago.

Hmm, I'm not so sure. Katie and Charli used to post a lot too, but I think they just have bigger and better things to worry about these days. As for the change on the board from 2 years ago... I think with the proliferation of everyone and their special blogs, people "growing up" (which means more responsibility at work or whatever and less time to post), and -- I know I'm gonna get pummeled for this -- the lack of truly interesting and intelligent exchanges on music, a lot of people are bored. Personally, I still love all you guys to death and you're still a part of my daily regimen whether I read all the new posts or not. Also, not to beat a dead horse here, but there are some pretty interesting musical conversations that go on in chatzy too, and in my humble opinion, a lot of the more interesting posters and contributers to obner have moved to that arena. Just my .02.

Although I do love to read rants from Konstantin on obner. Don't stop, D... keep the dream alive! ;)

Seriously speaking, I think Chatzy has become the downfall of Obner. I, for one, do not have time or luxury to sit in a chatroom while I'm at work. That's great that you guys do! Unfortunately, it minimizes the amount of interesting threads that this board could offer.

Didn't I start a thread like this earlier in the year, and then Drinky called me some kind of low level turd, or half daft dolt, everyone agreed with him, and we were done with it?

And Bob, FOR GOD'S SAKE, HAVE SOME RESPECT FOR YOURSELF.

The board killed the board. It was better at CMJ, it was even better when you had to place your phone on that cradle, and connect to a mainframe.

You people make me sick.

Rads, YSI me that Joe Pisapia "Daydreams" album and I will imolate this desolate place.

I frankly don't have the time or inclination these days for either the boards or chatzy(only been in there twice anyways). I'll post once in a while and I'll still lurk, but nothing on a regular basis.

Life is busy, and the less I'm on all boards the happier I am. The internet was sucking away my soul.

I still come on it, I just use it for other reasons. The kids keep me busy. And I've rediscovered books and Tivo. Oh how I love Tivo.

Leave it to billyg to ressurect a 'welcome' thread for a dormant boarder and have it turn into a tri-annual "________ killed the board."

I'm glad we've got one of them out of the way. Let's meet back here in a "Where's ______ Been Hiding?" in July.

I think there's a lack of interesting exchanges on music because of the abuse doled out by a few on those who might not know so much about every band out there. It just seems like there's a clique of posters who jump on some of the newer posters or more naive posters whenever they see their names come up - and often it seems like it's simply because they see their names come up and feel like taking out their aggressions on somebody. This board has always had a degree of that, but it used to be in check, and now it seems to have gotten way out of hand. I'm finding I spend a lot less time here and more elsewhere (like Sound Opinions where they seem to actually talk about music without attacking each other all the time.) This place has gotten, in a word, mean, and it's just not all that fun anymore. But I always come back because a good number of you still entertain me quite a bit - but overall, it's just not all that fun to visit Obner anymore, I'm sad to say.

No, see, you're misinterpeting again. The real situation is that all those people who get made fun of and picked on are little pansies with shitty taste in music who deserve it. And the people who do the picking are justified in their behavior because, if you can't take it, that's just further proof that you're a pansy who shouldn't be here in the first place.

I gotta say, it's a rare poster that I actually want to not be around anymore. Even people with apalling taste in music and the typing skills of a drunken chimp occasionally entertain me. Shit, we all jumped on Cats for his dumbass haiku posting format at first, but the next thing you know, he's bringing top-shelf content (hot tub poop threads aside).

Bob = the Paula Abdul of Obner.

This from a guy who's last thread came middle of last month and was about a mountain range.

Bring back the shitty movie script solicitations. At least those were funny.

Yeah, pretty much. Funny about the typing skills. I've lately noticed an explosion in misspellings of "separation". This is on top of the oft-mistaken "a lot".

If only I hadn't made that observation...
