the first two acts

Mixel Pixel
Grand Buffet

did not play any drums. just a cd with beats. Mixel Pixel did some kind of high school audio-visual club/dance-punk thing. it kind of held my interest. Grand Buffet are two white dudes who do hip-hop...the flow was a Run DMC meets Latyrx kinda style, but the actual lyrics were not the typical fare..they did raps about satan, jesus, and a treehouse. they were fun and made me laugh a few times so i picked up cd but i haven't listened to it yet.

of Montreal came out as a 5 piece (6 if you count the wacko doing some interpretive dance, 7+ if you count the big puppet and other various crazy shit) in full costume. slide show, video stuff, lights - it was sensory overload. they rocked the place. unfortunately they did so without the drumset (i think they only played it on 2.5 songs). it was like david bowie meets sonic youth meets...a cd playing back beats? so when they played moonage daydream i was not surprised, and when they made a lot of noise with their instruments i moved farther away from the stage (eh, i'm getting old i guess). kevin and some other guy on guitar. bp helium on bass, and dottie alexander and some other guy both played keyboards. anyway, it was pretty freaky, and i'm glad i saw it, and it made me recognize that "chemicals" off the new album is a great song, though in the end i prefered their old lineup and old/er catalog. they played free for the campus kids, the gen. public was 8 bucks, so if you get a chance to see 'em on the cheap go for it. it's definitely a spectacle in addition to being a show.

Ha. The Buffet are great. I don't know which album you picked up, but suffice to say their first is a larf. I want to get their DVD.
