Ok, so Jen's computer home page is some search engine that won't go away. If we change out home page it just comes right back. I've tried finding a way to get it the hell out of there but alas, no such luck so help a brother out. I think the page is onemoresearch.net, or something like that.

I've encountered this before. I fixed it by going into the control panel, and then going into "add/remove programs." there were quite a few spy-ware programs that were pretty easy to spot. look for things like "my search" internet toolbars, web enhancers, etc, things that kinda sound gimmicky.

But be VERY CAREFUL and don't delete something just because you don't know what it is. If it looks legit, it probably is. Just go for things that stand out.

I have never heard of them, but it's possible that you have a little bit of tracking software on your computer that is allowing them to change the home page back.

There is some information here:

http://www.computing.net/security/wwwbo ... 14181.html

And they say the software HijackThis will help clean that shit out:

http://216.180.233.163/~merijn/downloads.html

Good luck

the best way to get rid of whatever is causing the problem is to install and run either lavasoft's adaware, or spybot search and destroy. you can find both of them for free at download.com, and they both do a great job of ridding your system of spyware and speeding up your computer. anyway, after running one of these programs, you should be able to set the homepage to whatever you like.

I 2nd Ad-aware, though Spybot and Hijack This seem to be good, too.

Figuring out where the spy/adware came from would be a smart thing to do in order to decrease the likelyhood that it will happen again.

Ad-aware has never let me down.
One run through with that should do the trick.

the saga continues...

ok, I have spybot s+d and I ran it and the same old same old came up and was deleted, like strongbad. I searched for updates, and no go. Then I downloaded ad-aware and it installed fine but when I go to scan my computer shuts down. I get an error message telling me to save my files cause it's shutting down in one minute. WTF!!!

Once or twice I've had to completely re-install windows to get rid of this sort of thing.

I've never had any major spy-ware problems using Windows XP/Firefox browser though. If your not using Firefox, perhaps you should start thinking about it.

Oh fuck fuck fuckity fuck fuck.

This happened on that front computer a couple weeks back! Remember the one I told you about??(directed at Josh cause he knows what I'm talking about).

Every time I tried to run adaware it shut down. damnit.

Ok honey, let me take a look at it when I come home later. Let's abandon this project til then.

restart the computer, and at the very beginning of the boot process press F8 at intervals until the windows boot menu comes up. select the safe mode option. when windows comes up in safe mode, run ad-aware again.

Now now be nice.

It's just that we went through this a couple weeks ago with our work computers and fixed one but not two.

Sounds like things are worse than I thought; running adaware or spybot in safe mode is a good idea, but what you really need to do first (assuming your running windows xp) is download and install service pack II. You'd be amazed at how many problems that will solve. and firefox is also a great idea.

Agreed. And I will add that as useful as adaware as spybot are; keep in mind that they are FREE programs, therefore they WILL NOT solve all of your problems. I implore all of you to invest in a quality Scanning/AntiVirus/Firewall program.

I recently spoke to an IT guy about this situation (Haq will appreciate this because he knows how inquisitive/annoying I can be with my questions about computer problems); Anyway this guy actually said the Symantec/Norton line of products is the best (to him) on the market.

I currently run Norton internet Security 2005; besides occasionally having to temporarily disable or reconfigure the firewall settings I think it does a bang up job.

I am not a techie; Just a guy with a 3 computer home network and more than a dollar invested in some shit.....

Big Time Curtis......

microsoft is starting it's own adware remover. check out microsoft.com

worked pretty well for me. I suggest having adaware as well too though.
