I haven't really been around and I'm sure this must have been mentioned here and there, but I really feel there should be a 'Welcome to the East Coast' thread for Dri.

YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW EXCITED I AM ABOUT THIS

Laura, get those martinis ready, because I will share Dri with you (and vice versa).

Streetlight was and is much better than Amoeba anyway. Not that there are Streetlight Music stores in NYC either, but I'm just sayin'.

Santa Cruz, San Francisco, San Jose are the ones I know about/went to. Amoeba was always just too chaotic for me and there was nary an employee to help me find stuff. Granted, they do them in-store things, but Streetlight was always extremely helpful to me and you never got those, "how can you be buying THAT artist when you are dressed in THOSE clothes" kinds of looks at Streetlight. :)

I'm still not quite reconciled with the idea of Dri becoming a NYC girl... but I know she'll do great. No Amoeba? I'm sure there are other more enticing things to occupy your time in NYC, Dri. ;)

I'll be in San Fran in late June (for the Yankees vs. Giants series)....I'll be sure to check it out.....
Wait wait.....IS there a streetlight a few doors down from the Berkeley Amoeba? cause, whatever store that was, was better then Berkely Amoeba.

You know, that may be what it was. And the San Fran Streetlight I am thinking of may have been the Berkley one. I just cannot remember anymore.

The store down the street from the Berkeley Amoeba is Rasputin. That store is pretty good, but the Rasputin in SF sucks.

Streetlight is not better than Amoeba. More records at Amoeba. Also, I don't go there on the weekends when it's crazy -- during the week it's not so crowded and insane. The people at SF Amoeba have never been snooty to me. On the contrary, they are helpful and nice. But maybe I'm just wearing the right clothes :D

I agree that Amoeba has more records. However, quantity does not determine quality, IMO. Not that Amoebas wouldn't, but they will order you anything and bend over backwards to get you what you want/need at Streetlight.

And, duh. It was your fancy pants, fancypants, that kept them from being snooty. Anyway, just from my experience at both places, I always found Streetlight much more enjoyable than Amoeba. The listening stations at Streetlight were awesome too. It's where I first heard Explosions in the Sky. I don't remember massive listening stations at Amoeba.

ok so i don't have to explain this again, in which i did in another thread... i don't have a job yet. i was out here a couple of weeks ago for interviews, and the one i really wanted i didn't get. i might end up back at emi in the ny office, but that's as a last resort. they wanted me back, but i'm waiting to hear from them now that i'm actually here.

for now, i'm going to take another week or 2 off before i go back to job hunting because i want time to adjust here. my severance goes through the end of april so i'm okay until then. blah blah blah.

Comparing NY and SF record stores is useless, they're both way better than Chicago.

Fair enough. I used to go to Streetlight in San Jose when I was a lad, it's very nostalgic for me. You're right that they will indeed go out of their way for you.

The Amoeba in SF has these cool listening stations now, they're maybe two years old, that have a TON of albums in a database and you scan the cd barcode and can listen to the whole album. Or you can lookup the album in the database. Very nice!
