Pops had this on. I caught Ronnie Spector rambling for half an hour, quite possibly on drugs, before doing a couple of songs.

Then Patti Smith's speech (introduced by Zach De La Rocha. What??) and performances, including 'Because The Night' and a cover of 'Gimme Shelter' with Keith Richards.

I mostly wanted to catch REM's to see if it would be the four of them and to see if they'd do a number with Patti, seeing as how she was one of the main influences on Stipe, in the first place, but the show was just dragging on and on.

LOL Van Halen

Quote:
David Lee Roth: MIA

Only Van Halen's second lead singer, Sammy Hagar, and ex-bass player Michael Anthony turned up for their induction. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen has just gone into rehab and original lead singer David Lee Roth stayed away in a tiff over what he would perform.

Hagar said he wished his bandmates could be there, but "it's out of our control."

"It's hard for Mike and I to be up here to do this, but you couldn't have kept me away from this with a shotgun," Hagar said.

It took less to keep Roth away. He stood up the hall, reportedly because he couldn't agree on what to sing with the band Velvet Revolver, which offered a tribute. Joel Peresman, president and CEO of the Hall of Fame, said Roth was offered a chance to sing a song of his choice with the house band. "The decision not to come was solely his, not ours."

Hagar and Anthony joined Velvet Revolver to sing "Why Can't This Be Love."

I unfortunately watched this whole freakin thing last night because I wanted to see REM make their acceptance speeches and perform and they were the LAST band to be inducted.

Thoughts:

i know it's a running joke but dear god, Keef HAS to be close to death. He could barely get through his very short induction speech for the Ronettes. Seriously, he's entering into Muhammad Ali territory as far as public speaking.

Patti Smith is completely different when performing than when speaking. Her speech wasn't political and was very heartfelt but it was a nice touch to cover "Gimmie Shelter" for her performance saying "thanks to the Stones for giving us such a great anti-war song". She also did "Because the Night" and ' Rock N Roll Nigger".

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. I didn't realize how many freaking samples modern day hip hip has pulled from these guys. Kind of funny seeing them ask a LOT of old white folks "SOMEBODY SCREEEEEEEEEEAAAAM!!".

Van Halen. Absolute debacle. Neither Eddie or DLR were there. Velvet Revolver covered "Ain't Talkin Bout Love" and then Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar joined in for "Why Can't This Be Love?" with Paul Schaeffer on keys. Their whole thing was just bad and each member of Velvet Revolver said something for the induction speech. Terrible moment.

REM. Inducted by Eddie Vedder. Okay speech if not rambling. Wuxtury Records in Athens got the normal shout out when talking about REM"s beginnings. Bill Berry was there. Only Stipe and Mills spoke during the acceptance. They played "Begin the Begin" first. Stipe then said they wrote about 30 songs before they wrote their first one that they would record and then played "Gardening at Night". Then "Man on the Moon" and closed with "I Wanna Be Your Dog" with Patti Smith.

Whole night ended with everyone performing Smith's "People Have the Power". Seeing Sammy Hagar sing this was awkward at best.

Why is Sammy even there? I don't care about VH, but the Red Rocker hasn't put in the years, am I right?

REM (with Bill B) has a John Lennon song on the Darfur record and it doesn't suck.
