Shortly after he hopped on the John Tesh wagon, I guess.

Two comments: 1. For those leaving off Hank Williams because he is "too country" I'd say that its pretty easy to draw a straight line from Williams' songs to the early Beatles singles. Its about concise songwriting, good lyrics and memorable hooks. The same could be said for Buddy Holly I suppose but I'd be more understanding of his omission.

2. Those of you who put Jimi Hendrix. Why? Nothing against Jimi but I just dont see how he fits onto this list other than that he would make a cool looking image on the mountain.

Also, Bilz's Robert Johnson-John Locke analogy is fucking brilliant.

I kinda agree with this... no doubt the man was a master guitar player, but he clearly cribs off the original blues masters. He didn't originate that sound, but yes, he modified it and made it his own. But we're talking Rushmore here, people... RUSHMORE! ;)

James Brown (Lincoln)
Bob Dylan (Jefferson)
Neil Young (Roosevelt)

IMO, he is the end-all-be-all of rock guitar.
Every player has their sources.
But where Jimi cribbed from the blues masterS (plural); EVERY SINGLE (rock and most other styles) GUITAR PLAYER THAT HAS FOLLOWED has taken at least some influence from Jimi.

That's like faulting Dylan for cribbing from Woody Guthrie, The Beatles for cribbing from Buddy Holly, etc...

I hate to say it, but politically correctness aside, there simply is not a female in the early days of rock that can come close to making a final four.

If you've got suggestions, I'm listening. But, just tossing in a female would leave out a far more deserving male for this particular circumstance.

Oh I agree. But why are you limiting it to the earlyt days of rock? Lincoln and Roosevelt weren't early presidents.

Not that I can think of one afterwards who'd be too deserving either. Aretha?

I don't even think Aretha really deserves it compared to other women artists. I mean, isn't she known primarily for her version of an Otis Redding song?

I don't think anyone yet has mentioned Ahmet Ertegun. He's probably a top four all-time figure in the world of music.

yeah he was the only one I could think of that hadn't been mentioned 5 or 6 times.

That was a big hit for her, but she's got many many hits. If you had to pick a woman, I'd be hardpressed to come up with someone more deserving.

you don't listen to much aretha, do you? she's had a tremendous career with a lot of success. that's a great song you're referring, but it's not just "her version" that makes it great; it's that she took the song by a man and spun it for women. still, this is a "mount rushmore for rock music" and she doesn't have nearly enough influence on rock music to be on it.

I agree she doesn't belong there, but she was the best rock woman I could come up with (didn't consider Ella, Billie, or Patsy rock). I agree that it seems no woman belongs up there though. Well, except Streisand of course.

No, I don't listen to much Aretha.

I forgot about "Think" and "Chain of Fools" among others.

You're right, though, that her influence on (or presence in) rock is not enough for her inclusion here.

edit: The best women choices I can come up with right now are Joni Mitchell and Patti Smith, but neither one of them would really come close to being in the top 50 for me.

Upon further reflection, I'll strike Link Wray and swap in Alan Freed.

Hmm...for the dilemma of Lennon/McCartney, Richards/Jagger why not an apple, and a giant pair of RS lips?

I tried to pick people who changed something, or ushered in an era.

Sam Phillips--what he stands for and ushered in
Hendrix
Giant Apple-Beatles
Jimmie Rodgers
Howlin' Wolf

for shits and giggles I made this, though I left off Mr. Phillips, just cause I couldn't find a pic I liked.

It'd be cool to go spelunking in Howlin' Wolf's mouth.
