Anyone else? We talk about 24, Alias, Seinfeld, and the Simpsons a bunch. This sitcom (along with Welcome Back Kotter and Three's Company) was my childhood staple. I thought the 30th Anniversary show last night was pretty rad. And The Fonz made it. He actually jumped the shark with his leather jacket and a pair of almost tightie-whities.

Marion Ross still looks great.
Scott Baio seemed completely uninterested. As if he's ever done anything else.

Joanie looked like someone set her face on fire and tried to put it out with an ax.

I love the one where they jump the shark... and the one with Weezer.

I always liked the spinoff better - Mork and Mindy. Picked up season one of that and, man, Robin Williams was so good at improv that he has the entire cast laughing all the time, every episode...

Nah, it's a term used for when something has reached in height in achievement or popularity, and it's all downhill from there. On acid.

Because The Fonz actually got on a pair of water skis and used a ramp to jump over a shark. I guess many saw this episode as the beginning of all downhill and it carried over to other cultural phenomena in our society.

I'm pretty sure it stems from the Happy Days episode in which the Fonz waterski-jumped over a shark pen----and the series apparently went down hill from then on.

ed. too slow

FAQ:

Q. What is jumping the shark?

A. It's a moment. A defining moment when you know that your favorite television program has reached its peak. That instant that you know from now on...it's all downhill. Some call it the climax. We call it "Jumping the Shark." From that moment on, the program will simply never be the same.

The term "jump the shark" was coined by my college roommate for 4 years, Sean J. Connolly, in Ann Arbor, Michigan back in 1985. This web site, book, film, and all other material surrounding shark jumping, are hereby dedicated to "the Colonel."

The aforementioned expression refers to the telltale sign of the demise of Happy Days, our favorite example, when Fonzie actually "jumped the shark." The rest is history.

Jumping the shark applies not only to TV, but also music, film, even everyday life. "Did you see her boyfriend? She definitely jumped the shark." You get the idea.

i like how they said the show didn't really "jump the shark" after fonz actually jumped the shark because there were a 100 more episodes. I think he missed the meaning of the phrase.

sure there were shows after, but they weren't very good.
the Fonz as a teahcer? Richie with a moustache?

i have Happy Days Season 1 on dvd.

Believe it or not, I saw the 20th anniversary special they put on tv 10 years ago.

This 30 year one was pretty good though.

I love Happy Days
