I think drunk-texting was the preference this go 'round.

Sorry man, I've been driven down that street too many times the last few years for it to be exciting anymore.

Though they're in the same vein as the bands you listed, they're light years better. You're like Jimbo when he quit Homer's vigilante group to go to law school. Embrace TEH RAWK, Chad. I may eventually tire of The Fratellis, but it ain't gonna be anytime soon.

Where's Kit and Tania? Will you two back me up on what a kick ass show this was? Flint seems to have jaded our friend, Big Dick.

Yeah I dug 'em. But I see Chad's point. I guess I'm just not tired of that sound yet.

I've got to say again how amazing Boris are. They played a really "Pink"-style metal set bookended by a couple slower, more consonant drone numbers before The Melvins took the stage at the Scion showcase. Boris really fucking killed it at the best barbecue (without actually any barbecue). Then we went to check them out the following night at the Holy Mountain showcase and they played a completely different style set: non-stop for 40 minutes, extremely sludgy and epic, only time I've ever seen a drummer bang a gong with his hi-hat. He's really got evil down pat. The female guitarist is so incredible, petite and understated onstage, but so strong and large of stature in sound. I know from all they've put on record how diverse and versatile they are, but they really floored me individually and collectively with these sets. A personal highlight was riding the elevator at the hotel with them, and watching the push their girl in a stroller!

How did it take me 12 hours to catch a buzz on Friday?

Phil, I thought I might have seen you on the street last night, but wasn't sure enough to ask. Are you shorter than I expected and have some hair getting long.

Definitely did not meet as many of you as I'd've liked, but I may have been slightly aloof. That's the way in Austin, nu? Many happy returns, or never ever again.

I'm 5'9, my hair is maybe a half inch long now, but my beard is bonnie prince hajji. well, not quite yet, but damn soon.

When you back in town?

Also, who's up for spider house happy hour at 7?

I just wandered in about an hour.

Bonus Obnerite sightings -- Whiney, tthorn and Mr Mister yesterday. Fantastic time was had! So many artists to see, but my feet disowned me around midnight last night. Pedi-cab to the rescue. My last show was to be Amon Tobin and I couldn't make it. I am exhausted and in need of much sleep.

MiceElf, I saw Pete and the Pirates -- they were ok, but nothing to write home about. Didn't impress me all that much.

Band Rant of SXSW -- The Gallows. They fuckin' owned! Inyerfacepunk -- like only punk can be done. I absolutely loved 'em!

Red, thank you so much for hyping Frightened Rabbit to me -- they were fantastic!

I wish I were 19 so that I could hit up on Paolo Nutini. That boy is gorgeous.

I'll post more about the other bands and load the photos later (over 300 taken). Right now, I need sleep.

Phil, Colin & Deena were great hosts. Anytime you're in my neck of the woods you've always got a place to stay.

Just making a quick guest appearance to say how nice it was to meet a few of you Obner-ites last week! I'd say my sister Dana hangs with a pretty good internet crew!

Telephone conversation with a friend last night:
Beth: I'm getting too old for SXSW - this is my last one.
Friend: You say that every year.
Beth: Oh yeah, I do, don't I?

If anyone's in the ATL anytime, lemme know - we'll get a beer!

You're awesome, Beth! If Dana's even half as cool as you, she's doing pretty well. Hope to see you again next year! Maybe we can finally convince your lil' sis to show up...

Kit is right about the texting, Dri. My phone was aflame from all the texting between all Obnish at SXSW, trying to coordinate where to meet up, eat, see shows, blow chunks, etc. There was hardly an opportunity to drunk dial. Plus, I was never extremely drunk enough to pull the trigger.

Well, I guess I should write some sort of SXSW '07 post script or epilogue, so here goes...

1. Though great for spontaneity and instantaneousness, The Great Cameraphone Experiment of 2007 proved more novelty than anything else. Indie rock people dig lo-fi, but don't like lo-res. Next year, I'll bring a legitimate camera with video capabilty, and see if we can't leverage the magic of YouTube into some SXSW '08 gold.
2. Every single person I met, whether connected with Obner or not, was very cool. I honestly didn't encounter a single a-hole the entire time I was in Austin. It helped that I avoided the mirror.
3. I'm getting too old for this shit.
4. I'm getting (yeah, GETTING, right) too fat for this shit.
5. I'll be back again next year.
6. I may relinquish central point of contact duties to someone else next time.
7. The one indelible image from last week that will remain with me the rest of the year is seeing shiv laying stiff on the hardwood floor of the Phil-Colin Manor with his arms crossing his chest like he was in an open casket. He was probably a lot closer to death than any of us will ever know.

Bob, think of it this way, it's a great way to lose weight and get some exercise in with all the walking and dancing. I know I returned minus a few ell-bees.

It was so great to see and meet so many of you this weekend! You are all welcome anytime. Next time I'll quit my job the day before SXSW or something so I can actually go to more than 3 shows. That would kick ass. Although, I made one hell of a monger catch up on Saturday. That was a lot of fun but good god it looked like a bomb went off in the house when I woke up in the morning and I felt as if I had been in the blast zone.
