So I've always heard these guys are something I should hear and I know nothing about them and have never gone out of my way to hear any of their stuff. Now I find out they are going to be playing a show in my hometown (a hometown that sees about 10 meesly great shows a year, so I can't afford to miss any of them) and my interest has suddenly peaked.

So, Dinosaur Jr. crackerjacks, what should I listen to?

andyfest to thread.

in the meantime, i think there are two distinct eras of dinosaur jr - when lou barlow was in the band and after he left. i got into them after he left, so, not surprising, i prefer where you been to anything from when he was in the band, but you're living all over me is pretty much considered their best. you may want to start there. if you see them, you will not hear anything from the era after barlow had left, so just concentrate on the first few albums and you should be fine.

If you do go...and this cannot be stressed enough...use earplugs. More than one pair, if that's humanly possible.

You're Living All Over Me is pretty awesome. Ear Bleeding Country is a decent comp. Some solo Mascis on it though.

Although when I saw them last year, they played a ton of obscure tracks I didn't recognize.

To back up with everyone else has said, they are EXTREMELY loud. Wear earplugs.

green mind and bug.

though i probably have 6 or 7 of their albums and love them all in some way.

awesome band.

agree with stu that they played a bunch of the really early stuff when they toured last year... due to lou barlow returning, they only played stuff from the first few records, some of which i was unfamilar with.

I wouldn't call them awesome since J.'s singing voice can be downright awful at times, but there are a lot of cool songs.

YLAOM is my favorite and probably my favorite album of all time, and features one of my favorite songs ("Raisans").

For me, nothing beats Where You Been. J really shreds on "Get Me" and "What Else Is New."

I've seen one show there and it's an amazing, small little room.
Yeah, the sound was great.

where you been has what's arguably dinosaur jr's catchiest song. i can't trust people who set aside whole eras of a band just like that. i may not care for the barlow era, but there's good stuff in there.

Barlow is on Bug isn't he?

This is a band I need to listen to more. I like You're Living All Over Me and Bug, and I plan to pick up Green Mind eventually.

I've actually been kind of digging the new one.

Could've been an abomination but I have been pleasantly surprised.

green mind has one good song on it, and it was my 2nd album of theirs so it wasn't like i was bored of their sound when i got it.

all the pre-green mind albums are great.
your living on me has 4 awesome songs, and the rest aren't quite filler but aren't quite great.

amazing live show.

I'm with you.

I'll back up the earplugs thing as well.
