You have an autistic son, right Phil?

Nah, he was misdiagnosed when he was a toddler, but he actual has sensory integration dysfunction. He's a lot more interactive than autistic kids, just has had to have a lot of therapy to be able to separate and prioritize all sensations. We've been helped by the fact that he's extremely smart. If he weren't, we couldn't have mainstreamed him.

It should be noted that I posted the thread around 2:00 am and I get a little goofy around that time of the day.

Them chickens need a leader. Like in "I, Robot," but with chickens.

So I had fried chicken for lunch.

It was one of those Banquet frozen dinners that are $1.

Now, I'mnot sure about how the chickens were "treated" but I'll be damned if they weren't under nourished. There was not much meet on them bones.

None-the-less it was tasty and greasy. Whoever invented the deep fryer, needs to get some sort of nobel prize.

All those chickens in the Purdue factory are happy campers. They're being fed (and fed well) and that's all that matters to them.

Bullshit.

Doesn't matter what kind of critter you are, being force-fed is painful. Being so unnaturally fat you can't move is a bad thing and living on a mesh screen above your own feces and piss is not right.

You can argue that their brains aren't developed enough to know anything about what's happening to them, but that just means we've bred that stupidity into them. Regardless, it doesn't have to be that way. These chicken companies can own land and let the chickens at least walk a few feet.

Hey, I'm ethically conflicted about this and downright annoyed with myself for continuing to eat factory farm meat, but I'm just offering my bit back to those who think the whole issue is funny and that those who don't like factory farms are even funnier. Because that points to a callousness that has nothing to do with PETA (who give rationality a bad name) or actual chicken, in my opinion.

There's only two things I worry about as moral imperatives:

It's wrong to cause misery to living creatures if that misery is avoidable and without considering the reasons for that misery.

If that misery is necessary, it's wrong to take pleasure in causing it.

So which is a more appropriate penance for my desire to eat fried chicken? Is it to shed one tear a la Iron Eyes Cody as I pick at the last remaining thigh in the box? Or would it be more appropriate to spill out some of that tangy barbecue sauce on the ground for the chickens who have passed before me?

I think it was chase who said that if you aren't bothered enough to do anything about it, you aren't that bothered. I agree with that.

You're right, of course. I don't claim to have the moral solution. I'm just replying to the people who scoff that it's even a problem and who think people who worry about it are silly.

Hopefully, I can come to a compromise that'll make me feel less queasy. Like find that Murray chicken stuff.

Interesting sidenote: good 'ol Jesse Jackson called for a KFC boycott today...

and there are lots of more sticky-worthy threads than this one..

Besides, if you really want to support Chicken's rights, you don't have to stop eating them - just listen to

I thought it was worth skimming over.
Some of the arguements were too wordy, but most of the one line responses are nice.

It ain't Minority Report, but it's actually a pretty good sci-fi. Will Smith carried the film better than I thought he would.

Like a good hypocrite, I don't extend the credo to self-inflicted misery. I use the maxim to avoid being the caustic sonofabitch I know I'm capable of being, but I cause lots of misery for myself.
