so here's my sister's review of SxSW:

It's all over now and I'm back to my dull work-a-day life…. But, the memories will be there forever. I thought I'd send out a little wrap-up for those that might be interested.

HIGHLIGHTS – Let's start with the great stuff!

** The Nightwatchman (aka Tom Morello) – Having seen The Nightwatchman a few years ago as part of the Tell Us the Truth tour with Billy Bragg and Steve Earle, this showcase was on my must-see list. And what better venue for protest songs than Austin's Central Presbyterian Church… Wow! The Nightwatchman rocked the pulpit with his acoustic activist folk songs and had the crowd cheering with his songs Maximum Firepower, House Gone Up in Flames and Flesh Shapes the Day. Rage Against the What-evah – this here's a g-d One Man Revolution!

**Amy Winehouse – Believe the hype! This tiny woman's got a voice as big as her beehive! She packed the house at Island Records' day party at Bourbon Rocks. In a sea of female singers with barely-there vocals, Amy stands apart – she belted out, with gusto, her hits, Back to Black and Rehab, as part of her four-song set . And the lady has the attitude to go along with that voice – the guy standing next to me was convinced she was winking at him during the entire set and I don't doubt that she was!

**Peter, Bjorn and John – See above regarding hype…. It took a couple of attempts to finally see this trio of Swedes (they were definitely one of the busier acts during SxSW – Peter mentioned, with sarcasm, how much fun it was playing 10 gigs a day for three days) but it was worth it. They played the DirectTV Live venue in the conference center on Thursday night; we were treated to quite a few songs from the recently released Writer's Block, including the much-talked-about Young Folks with its whistling intro. See these guys when they're in the States in May!

**Donovan – Yes, THE Donovan. His showcase was also at the Presbyterian church and he played everything one could've wished to hear - Sunshine Superman, Season of the Witch, Mellow Yellow, Lalena….. This 60-year-old legend held the audience in the palm of his hand. It was a privilege to see and hear him!

GOOD STUFF (PREVIOUSLY KNOWN) – All are worth checking out…..MySpace, live, local radio – wherever they may be found. Several of these acts I've seen before (some multiple times); others were on my radar but I'd not seen a gig before.

*Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly
*Aqualung
*Fionn Regan
*Sondre Lerche
*Willy Mason
*Nellie McKay
*Andrew Bird
*Damien Dempsey
*Josh Pyke
*Bon Savants
*Midlake
*Clem Snide
*Oppenheimer

GOOD STUFF (PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN) – These are bands I didn't have a clue about but will seek out their music and try to see them locally should the opportunity present itself.

*Mando Diao
*The Storys
*Quien es, BOOM!
*Solid Gold
*Lonely China Day
*Peter and the Wolf
*Earl Greyhound
*Puppetmastaz
*My Latest Novel
*Robert Gomez
*Tokyo Police Club

WISHING AND HOPING – These acts were on my to-see list but somehow (somehow? yeah, with 1600 bands and 4 days, there's just not enough time) I missed them. So they'll still be on my to-see list!

*Matt & Kim
*My Brightest Diamond
*Micah P. Hinson
*Fujiya & Miyagi
*The Bird and the Bee
*Mika
*Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin
*Do May Say Think

LOWLIGHTS – Yeah, you knew there were bound to be a few, right?

^One Umbrella – Ick. A man with greasy strands of hair swirled around his bald pate with a bank of laptops in front of him. No good could come of this. The person next to me observed, 'This man probably doesn't have a lot of dates. Or friends.' Oh, and he couldn't make music either.

^Ane Brun and Teitur – Snoozzzzzzzzzzzzfest. They should've referred to the venue as Naptime on the 18th Floor of the Hilton Garden Inn. There were banquettes in the venue and folks were sleeping…..honestly. Maybe the lack of daylight in Sweden and Denmark results in musicians with very low energy levels that they subsequently transfer to their listeners.

^31 Knots – Someone needs to tell this band that, while punk is most definitely not dead, their method of reproducing it should be. I saw a better punk band just playing in a bar one afternoon, not even an official part of the festival. That lead singer stuck his head in the ceiling fan. Now, that's punk rock.

Obviously this is just a portion of the bands I actually saw and that were easily categorized, according to my methods anyway. Every year I say I'm getting too old for SxSW and yet I continue going. There's no better opportunity to see established bands and complete unknowns playing one after the other – what an experience it is!

just wanted to tell everyone that I met that it was great to finally meet you. had a great time in Austin - really cool town...if i needed to live in the south - this would defintely be up at the top of the list.

drank myself into oblivion several times. would have loved to spend more time with obners but our time was pretty short, unfortunately.

saw some great bands including - the stooges, kings of leon, spoon, steve earle, buffalo tom, the drams, ron sexsmith, etc. etc.

'Twas nice meeting you too, Rodney...though, I have to admit, you're definitely right about being shy! Your pal was definitely cool.

Wish I could have spent more time with the rest of y'all, but bands and artists they were a callin'!

I was out late last night (saw The Fratellis, Pipettes and LaRocca) and will post my review tonight along with some photos.

For a second there I thought that was slang for you having walked in on him after he brought that chick home with him.

No, there wasn't any walking in on that. They were spooning mere feet to my right. Me and shiv shared the same quarters, a.k.a. the dining room. I apparently slept soundly through his "package delivery."

In a truly odd somewhat SXSW-related development, my friend Jerry who was in town with me for the week is getting married next week to a girl from Italy he works with (and has dated a few times) and is having immigration problems. It's a step to help her stay in the country.
She asked him last week and offered him cash money/a dowry if he'd do it.

Truly odd, even for Jerry, who attracts oddity like a magnet.

The big day is next Tuesday. Sadly, he lives in NYC and I won't be able to attend. But if I did, a tuxedo Tshirt would be the only suitable GARb for the occasion.

Just thought those of you who met and hung out with Jerry might find that interesting.
