i've head that the "proper" way to write a rock/pop song is to write the melody, get all the chords worked out and so forth, and then write the lyrics. of course i've never done it that way...

anyway, do djs come up with beats and the then the mc raps over them, or do the lyrics and flow come first, and the dj works the beat around that?

i would say
lyrics and flow first

...
you'll need
1) blunts
2) 40s

2. bitch about lots of shit

3. include a possee

4. get someone who knows what the hell he's doing to do the beats cuz your ass sure ain't doin it

Basically all you need today apparently is small suitcase full of cash, no singing talent, and a microphone.

The worst atrocity Ian McKLaye has even unleashed upon the world.

That's a debate for another thread to be sure.

Bort--I think generally big name rappers buy beats and then try to find a great hook/chorus. Basically, in my opinion, 9/10 mainstream rap records these days get heralded because of their production it seems. Break the mold and try to have strong spitting skills and production.

alot of the time beats are made and sold to the highest (in both ways) bidder

good luck, I've tried to make beats but I always end up making them to complicated and layered so they never sound crunk
