Next for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Modest Mouse, Shins, Arcade Fire indie-mainstream maybe-even-radio-hit type-success?

I think I heard a song of theirs in a commercial for the new Sandler movie.

A police officer has one of their songs stuck in his head in the latest issue of Punisher War Journal.

Plus, they're from New York. That's always popular.

not sure. their third album needs to be better and they need to have a much better PR group. I thought both the first two had catchy radio-friendly stuff on it...no reason it couldnt have made it to the mainstream

Actually I think I do vaguely recall hearing 'Evil' on the radio once or twice around here when Antics came out. But not even close to the number of times 'Float On', 'Maps' or 'Wake Up' was played.

That's what I was thinking.

When Antics came out it seemed like they were everywhere.

Do they play them at your work?

They got all kind of mainstream radio play; its a done deal on Interpol.

Why does it matter anyways?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure "NYC" was played on one of the last episodes of "Friends", you can't get much bigger than that.

I like them, I think I have both albums with me today.

In point form:

- I love both their records
- I have mos def heard them on tv in some way
- they suck suck suck live
- I don't think their music is blantantly indie-peppy, twee, or agro enough for them to get attention like YYY or the Shins or whatever.

I believe Razorblade suitcase was the follow up album to Bush's multi-platinum debut Sixteen Stone.

Yeah, I get that... it's just an odd comparison to hear out of Drinky. And I think I approve of the implications.

Nope.

From what I can find, neither of their albums has even been certified gold. Of course, I'm not really sure how to look up stuff like this. (According to what I could find the RIAA site, the only Matador artist to be certified gold is Liz Phair.)

Anyway, Interpol = Bush 2000. If not so much in record sales... more so in other areas.

Huh? I can understand if you aren't into them, but what makes Interpol the next Bush?

I suppose it could be an impressive (if not great) debut followed up by a decent, but not quite as impressive second album. But there are so many bands that have done that...

Anyway, flesh out this thought more, I'm curoius.

I agree with this - their style doesn't fit in w/the current type of indie rock that's taken off the last couple of years. Their next album should do well, but I don't see them being a Shins/Modest Mouse/Arcade Fire type story.

And if I remember correctly, both their albums have sold in the 400,000+ range.

I might be mistaken but I think Drinky is calling them Posers.

I don't really need to flesh it out more. It was just meant as a shallow inflammatory remark.

Obviously I view them as being forgettable, derivative, and style-over-substance. The comparison came more from the style thing. And bad lyrics.

edit: Posers.

If I recall correctly, the thoughts on Razorblade Suitcase 10 years ago was that it was Bush's attempt to score a critically adored 'artistic' album, so they tried to toughen and legitimize themselves by getting Steve Albini to produce it. So seeing as Antics sounded about the same as the debut, and they didn't go out and get themselves a Steve Albini to produce it, I don't think it's an apt comparison.
