I'm with Spoon. I enjoyed every album a little less than it's predecessor.

Adore was the first Smashing Pumpkins album that I bought, so I picked that one. However, I like every album for different reasons. In fact, I'd say my favorites are Adore and Machina followed by Mellon Collie and Siamese Dream. They're all A-quality albums in my book, but in particular, I like how Billy's sound evolved over the years and the results of Flood's contributions to the band.

You mean there's more than one Smashing Pumpkins album worth owning?

I'm actually quite surprised Adore has more votes than Mellon Collie. Do people dislike MC in general or just in relation to their other albums?

I think it's that there are "adore" people, and there are "smashing pumpkins" people....

I'm sure that people who enjoy, say, Cherub Rock the best would probably prefer MC to Adore, but you can only choose one album....

did anyone actually listen to that last album? yech, I'm not even sure they did. f course, by then D'arcy was too busy hittin' the pipe and givin BJs to Mickey Rourke to notice anything.

the old school fav is siamese dream, but i love the grandeur of "mellon collie", even though it needs trimming of 2-to-4 songs on each disc.

Machina is one of my favorite albums. I understand why some people don't like the record, especially compared to earlier releases, but I like every single thing about it. The overblown production, the ridiculous lyrics, the crazy processed guitars, the classic SP drums, everything about it is awesome. It's like a futuristic version of Siamese Dream for assholes like me.

By the way...
Flood is one of the most underrated producers ever.

if mellon collie was shortened to one album then it would be great. but there's just too much crap. i haven't heard any full albums past mellon collie. i would think that pisces iscariot would be up there too

Mellon Collie has my vote.

It's just a little better than Siamese Dream and Adore. So what if a couple songs don't need to be there? There are lots of great ones.

Also, even though it hasn't held up as well as Siamese Dream, it made a bigger connection at the time, and I think there is a place in the world for albums which hit harder but have a shorter life span.

What did D'Arcy ever contribute or even play on a Pumpkins record?

I like Machina: "This Time" is one of my favorite Pumpkins songs

np: see above

Gish, although I do still have a soft spot for Siamese Dream.

If not for J. Chamberlain's skin tickling alone. The percussion on Gish dominates the entire record (B.Vig production?). In '91, I would've sworn JC was J. Bonham incarnate. I've not listened to anything beyond SD, so my vote is pretty much null & void.

np> xtc - english settlement

What? John Bonham incarnate? What are you on about? Two totally different styles, imo. Bonham bashed his drums into submission, JC "tickled" with much more finesse and incredibly fast rolls. I'm dying to hear his solo disc...

English Settlement- we agree on that.

yeah. theyre undoubtedly two great drummers, but jimmy chamberlain is basically a jazz drummer transplanted into a rock band. theyre two very different styles of drummer.

has everyone here heard machina II? its not their best album, but its still pretty damn good. you can google it fairly easily. theres a few sites that have it.

Siamese Dream redefines inertia, so it gets my vote. "Mayonaisse", "Cherub Rock", "Spaceboy", and "Geek USA": AHHHHH. :rawk:

That being said, "XYU" from Mellon Collie makes me hurt myself more.

There are only like 4-5 songs on both discs of Mellon Collie on my opinion that I would consider as filler.
