I recently got accepted into Evergreen State College and was wondering if any of the Obnish lived in the area. I've heard that Olympia was a good city for music plus it's near Seattle and Portland so that's a major plus. The main reason that I'm going to go there is that most of my favorite music comes from the Northwest. Also it doesn't hurt that Evergreen State College is where Bikini Kill, Beat Happening and Sleater Kinney were Formed and it was the school that other people like Johnathen Poneman and Matt Groening went to. Plus the school doesn't use any grades so that also helps.

its a really good hippie school. olympia is a decent fairly small city but yeah - its around an hour to seattle and an hour and a half to Portland. Plus close to Mt Ranier, Mt St Helens, and you can cut over to the Olympic Peninsula quite easily (one of the most gorgeous locales in the lower 48)

I had a friend there for film school. He lives in Houston, TX now. Don't think he's working in film.

Olympia is my hometown. I lived there through the end of highschool, but not for several years.

My family still lives there and I visit frequently--there's a lot more to do there now than 15 years ago, but that's not really saying much. Not a bad place to go to college though.

My mom has worked at Evergreen for 25 years--still loves the place. It's still considered one of the better small liberal arts colleges in the west, and it's great for the right type of student. I think you'll enjoy it.

I hate to say it, but I remember Olympia by three things-- (a) the big state capitol building as you're coming around the bend on I-5, (b) the old Rainier Beer brewery (which is now Miller or something), and (c) it means I'm roughly an hour away from Seattle. ;)

I'm not certain if any Obners live in Olympia - I know that there are a few of us in the Seattle area(Kabob and myself are still active, and there may be some that I'm leaving out) - As for Portland, as you can see above both Contradiction and RParis live there as well as a few others(Dnorwood comes to mind)

Lived there for 2 years. Lived near there for most of my life.

It's a nice city with a good vibe. A little small for me, but Seattle is just up the way.

Evergreen is a strange place. It's full of these clichéd rich kids from the east coast. Hippies full of unrest, looking for an agenda when they really just need to relax and comb out the dreads. The thing that really bothers me about them is how much they're just giant conformists, but they carry this undeserved air of superiority. It's bizarre. I'm pretty liberal, but if I went to school there I'm sure I'd find myself stocking up on Rush Limbaugh books just for some balance. Lots of blind liberalism there.

I wasn't defining the meaning of the song. I was quoting the lyric.

thats what I've heard, but I mean coming from a small town in the south, it's just a switch from blind conservatism and rednecks to hippies and blind liberals. I don't know I like hippies better, their funny and have good drugs

It's been awhile since I've been around Obner. I'm a Greener grad. Evergreen was great for an undergrad education. There was a good group of science folks who believed in showering good beer and potent weed. Oly was fun, although I haven't spent any time there since graduating in 2000.

i'm sure it's a fine school and all, but making a decision based on the town's music scene doesn't sound like the best tactic when choosing something that costs thousands of dollars

I mean it's not "based" around the town, I'm also really interested in the inter-disciplenary way that they teach their classes, as well as what type of classes they offer compared to the college that I'm currently at
