Do I really need this to attend a show during SXSW? Or can I just show up at the door or get tickets in advance like any other normal show?

three ways:

1) Badge (what you have) - high price. gets you into the conference.
2) Wristband - a little over $100 (cheaper if bought before SXSW in Austin). Gets you into shows - after the badge people get in.
3) Tickets - last in line, last in right. Tickets average $10 per show. If you want to bounce around, you'll be making a bad investment by just getting tickets.

I suggest having an Austinite get you a wristband --- unless you like "conferences".

Last year, when the doors opened, tix went on sale, so if you got yr. ticket before a wristband person showed up, you'd get in. Basically it was first come first served, but it was much easier to cue up in line if you had the wristband -- which is the route I went.

Thanks for the advice! I'll assume I can order a wristband online? I only want to go for a weekend though, so it sounds like i'd be paying a lot for only a few shows.

If this is what you want to do, and you can get a schedule before hand, depedning on who you want to see, you can get in by buying tix at the gate. I think Moxie has said he did this last year.

I don't think you can order wristbands online - I'm not sure though. There is a special rate for people who buy them early in Austin, and most people head over to Waterloo Records and pick them up for their friends there.

Actually, I volunteered last year, so I 'earned' the badge. But, like the Senator & Babe have pointed out, it's much more economical (& efficient if you're hitting lots of acts) to get the wristband versus buying tix per show. I would also advise that you scrap the 'weekend' plan, if possible. Wed. night - Friday are the nights to attend. And during weekday daytime hours, check out all the free outdoor & in-store showcases. Saturday & Sunday are wind-down days saved for lesser-known acts & softball & bbq.

I'll be at SXSW as a volunteer again this year. Unfortunately, that leaves me with little shmooze time, but I will try to meet up with the others at least one night. I have to balance family & work outside of the volunteership.

Any of you who will be at SXSW had better make AT LEAST a token appearance at Obstock, or I will go Buford Pusser on your ass!!!
