I acquired this many months ago but only recently found it on an mp3 cd I had stored somewhere. I listened to it about a month ago once and haven't thought about it until right now, when I put it on again. What the hell is going on here? Are there really people who enjoy this? Is this going to grow on me? Basically, what the hell?

I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll never be cool, because I think the record's a load of shit. In no way enjoyable.
And I question the sincerity and/or judgement of anyone who sings its praises.
Its legendary status is one of the biggest hoaxes/travesties of rock-era popular music.

You basically described my thoughts on The Stooges perfectly.

And, I agree with you on this record as well. Pretty much any rekkid that has a "mad genius" behind it actually sucks a fat one.

See Also: Skip Spence, Syd Barret, Roky Erickson.

I think I'd rather be burned alive and doused with bloody pissy vomit than hear a single note of this album again.

The Magic Band was one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

I like Trout Mask Replica, or at least parts of it. Some of the guitar work on it is really great.

my dad loves this cd, but I don't fully get it. I like some of the songs like the one about peas from venus and a few of the other ones and think that some of the guitar is really good on it. I can appreciate what he does on this and I think it is a cool cd but I don't really listen to it all that often

Man, there's this one album that some people, like music critics and stuff, say is really good, but I just don't like it! A bunch of other people don't like it, either! Man, what is up with that?

I say it's total bullshit!

Oh, and what is up with all that other stuff that's all, like, overrated? It makes me all angry and shit!

Easy tiger.

No one's pulling out the nukes over someone's enjoyment or lack thereof of Van Vliet and company.
Someone inquired as to why a much-lauded record gets so much love when to his ears it is very clearly akin to an audio bowel movement.

The peanut gallery concurred and some chose to debunk (rightly or wrongly - LooGAR and I will never find common ground on The Stooges) a few other records that in their eyes get blindly (deafly?) praised by the masses.

Seems the only one whose blood pressure has escalated in this whole go-around is you.

well, take what you want from the Trout Mask Replica, but it was a revolutionary and highly experimental record that has influenced a lot of people, so that probably has a lot to do with it.

Umm... cause it is fucking poetry? Cause it sounds like late period Coltrane and Woody Guthirie at the same time? Cause it scoured the ears and butt-fucked the hypothalamus when the Eagles were on every fucking radio every ten minutes?

Late period capitalism sucks....let's all go swallow cough syrup.

I accept that explanation if you change Eagles to Beatles, what with the subject being released in 1969 and all.

Yeah, this is basically me as well.

When I first bought it I worshiped it for a couple of months. Now I think I would be ok if I never listened to the whole fucker all the way through again.

Still enjoy the random song popping up on shuffle.

Now Spotlight Kid/Clear Spot on the other hand...

You think? I haven't been to the doctor in a while so I dunno.

Maybe what I need to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and formulate a lengthy defense for the things I like that other people don't get.

Bought it, listened to half of it, sold it back. The record store employee gave me a look of deepest loathing when I brought it in.
