I bought a new computer! Yessiree --- Pentium 4, DVD/CD-RW capabilities, 160 GB...more gizmos that I'll ever know what to do with! I've FINALLY entered the 21st century! I can finally make mixes! I can finally buy a digital camera! Oh, what joy!

What's next you ask? The ultimate decision of whether I should go for DSL or cable.

The world is mine....miiiiiiiiiiiine!!!

I went DSL cause the cable companies around here suck ass as far as service goes. When cable goes out, so does your modem, and our cable is out too often for my tastes. Verizon however, is always on.

Awesome!

I prefer cable because it's much faster than DSL (in Calgary, anyway) but it all depends on which provider is more trustworthy. If you already have cable tv you can probably get a deal for internet.

Woohoo!

There is nothing like the feeling of a new computer, no viruses, everything works as it should, you can find everything. Love that...love it.

congrats.!

I personally love our cable modem. I can't say anything negative about the DSL people out there, as there are many who love that as well. We bundle ours with our Cable TV service so that is nice. I think you can do the same with SBC Phone and their DSL offers.

Cable seems to be always up except for the rare bad storm that knocks a line down. What do you have available? I know some DSL companies require that you live in a certain radius for their service...

I ended up buying an e-Machine (which I recently learned is owned by Gateway).

As for DSL, I've got Verizon (cost is $29.99) phone service -- I assume I could lump both together. And for cable, I have Adelphia. I've not heard anything bad about either and the cost is probably around the same. I'll have to research the cable a bit more.

DSL tends to be slower, but it's (generally) a little cheaper. If you plan on listening to a lot of internet radio stations or downloading a lot of music (I imagine you do), go with cable.

Congrats!!!

Cable is usually more expensive but it's also faster & more dependable.

The dependability really depends on your service provider.

My DSL isn't as quite as fast as my roommates cable, but even with streaming music and video it doesn't make enough difference to really matter or cause one to take notice.

You should be able to lump it with your phone service, I think I got $5 off my monthly DSL bill when I did that.

I had SBC DSL while in Sherman Oaks and I was perfectly satisfied with it. The drawbacks to DSL appear to be that generally your download speed will be considerably faster than your upload speeds. I don't think this should matter too much to you though. The only bad thing I've heard about cable is that some companies can monitor and throttle your bandwidth if you get out of control. I believe you need to download/upload an extreme amount to incur their wrath though.

Congratulations! I just helped some friends purchase components for a budget PC - we're building it in one of these:

DSL is a fixed speed.

I hear cable speeds can fluctuate with traffic in your neighborhood or building. My computer programmer brother says that cable is also less secure, because you can see other people in your building. Is this true?

Saying "DSL is fixed speed" is a bit misleading. The line is dedicated, but that doesn't mean that the hardware at the switching station isn't taxed to the point where no one is getting full speed out of their connection. There are many points at which a connection can bog down. Cable also has a far higher maximum speed.

There is really nothing to worry about as far as security, since most cable modems are also firewalls, and if yours isn't you can grab a router, and if you don't want to, you can run Windows firewall (cause I'd TOTALLY trust Microsoft security...)
