yeah i was going to make it a mix but when i was trying to do that, i realized it would be even more disjointed than most of my other mixes and so they're all just samples, no logical order or anything, just individual songs.

exactly, like a "sampler". all i'm saying is it's like reading only the 3rd chapter of a 12 chapter book. i'll spin it through one or two more times and see if i want to check out these albums in their full and natural environment/s.

Best Obner post in a long time. I just ordered five of these. Thanks... finding new music is reason to live.

1. The Besnard Lakes – The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse

And from getting more info and samples from Sclavia I got the new Enrico Rava (I am a big fan of Erik Truffaz and Tomas Stanko, I wonder how I missed a whole career of this guy).

So I listened to these last night.

That Besnard Lakes song is really good. I'll have to hear the rest of that album at some point.

Also, the Rotting Christ song was actually pretty cool. It's not quite enough to make me want to dig deeper into black metal, but it's got a nice overall sound.

Wow, who is Louis Sclavis? I'm assuming he's the sax player here, but it's actually the subtle rhythm parts that really make this track work for me. And it works really well. I'd like to hear more.

The Amiina track is nice. I could imagine that being a decent album.

And the rest… just didn't really do anything for me. I found myself wondering, with all of the stuff that you take in, what makes some of this stuff stand out to you. Different strokes, I guess. I just feel like the bulk of this stuff could be easily compared to something really similar but a little (or a lot) better.

I think I get what bort was saying, too. Some of these tracks almost sound like segues so they might not be they best way to judge these particular artists (unless all of their stuff sounds like that). The Flowers of Hell track, for instance, may be a real standout on that album, but listening to it in this bunch songs makes it just sound like an interlude.

Not trying to rag on you or anything here. Just sharing some thoughts. The only tracks I really didn't like were the Pantha Du Prince, Cory Chisel, and Lucky Soul ones.

The Shins album is OK...the other three are awful.

I think it's great that the focus of this thread has shifted to Modest Mouse, The Shins, Arcade Fire, and CYHSY. Obner monotony wins out!

(I actually think that Modest Mouse album is good. Arcade Fire is really weak, though, and the others aren't worth my time.)

The Lucky Soul album just reminds me of how Acid House Kings pretty much rule.

And while I'm here, the only one of the standard quatych that's any good is clearly Arcade Fire.

I can't believe you would think he would have those albums on his list. Do you not pay attention to what contra talks about on these boards?

The album features side players from British Sea Power, Tindersticks, Death In Vegas and features Sonic Boom on one song and his influences in the rest. It was produced by Tim Holmes of Death In Vegas, and basically it's just an awesome album. Sounds like late Spacemen 3 and the more awesome moments of Spiritualized, but you know, almost all instrumental. It's post-rock sure, but it's way more interesting than the typical Explosions In The Sky stuff. The drones mess with your head, the horns are played so subtly and surreal that you will look over your shoulder to make sure you're not tweaking. And there are some world music influences here and there too. Fantastic headphone album, and maybe a better album to play loud while waking up or taking substances (I don't do the latter). Music of truly epic proportions.

this album is currently kicking my ass...thanks for the rec andy! this is a MUST for any fans of spacemen 3/spiritualized.

stu, have you managed to track this one down yet? let me know...you will LOVE this shit.

found this post over the weekend and i am damn excited about it. i checked out lucky soul, aniima, pantha du prince and a sunny day is glasgow. i need to llisten to all of 'em more but i am immediately liking a sunny day in glasgow. i believe i will like lucky soul when i am more in the mood for some upbeat pop. i also have been enjoying besnard lakes the past month. i heard about it through the sound opinions podcast, if i remember correctly. thanks for all this new music. yipee

The Besnard Lakes album has really grown on me a lot.

El-P, on the other hand, has dropped like a rock.

I'd still like to hear that Louis Sclavis album and some of the others you mentioned in the description of it.
