Important Announcement.

Y'ALL:

It's with a wide range of emotions and feelings that I'm announcing that we have parted ways with Jason.
The split, which I consider extremely amicable is the result of a period of personal and artistic growth from all sides which has left us with differing dreams and goals.

Jason joined our band, mid-tour, in the fall of 2001, shortly after the release of our 4th album (Southern Rock Opera). His impact on the band was immediate and profound, bringing an awe-inspiring combination of vocal range, guitar dexterity, and amazing songwriting and leading us into an era of creativity that has resulted in three albums that I will be proud of for as long as I live.

Life in a band is always a delicate balancing act of personal and musical chemistries. Having been in bands for most of my life, I still marvel that any band stays together for longer than a year. Especially if the band in question spends anywhere from 150-220 days a year on the road, as our band has done since 1998. That said, I have also likened this band to a family. A big, messy, sometimes dysfunctional one, but a family full of love all the same. It is in this spirit that I plan on Jason continuing to be a part of our lives wherever our roads and dreams take us in the immediate future.

Jason is about to embark on a tour (including a leg of dates with Son Volt) with his stellar band and will be releasing (finally) his amazing solo album "Sirens of the Ditch" < July 10 from New West Records > . We all are wishing him nothing but the absolute best on every step that plays before him.

Cooley and I will have played together for 22 years this summer and DBT is about to begin it's 12th year of existence on the very day that we will be going into the studio to begin recording our 8th album. Cooley recently sent me a demo of five new songs and yesterday I demoed nine new ones for consideration. In addition to Shonna and Brad (who is coming up on ten years in the band) John Neff will be playing with us full time, playing both guitar and pedal steel. John was a founding member of the band in 96 and has already played on four of our albums and has been on the road with us, full time for going on two years.

It is my sincere and and adamant hope that everyone will support all of us, and by that I mean our band and Jason's, as we deal with this transition. Jason's tenure in this band has been one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me on a personal and musical level and our love for him and his music is in no way changed or endangered by our collective decision to move into different directions.

In addition to the upcoming THE DIRT UNDERNEATH tour and the recording of our next album, we will also be playing some special ROCK SHOW dates this summer and hope to do another leg or two of THE DIRT UNDERNEATH in the fall.

As always, the bond that we have with each other, as well as with the folks that come to our shows and listen to our records has always been one of the things that has set this band apart. We plan to continue on in that tradition and spirit and hope you will come with us as we attempt to tell another tale and Rock the nights away a little while longer.

Sincerely Yours,
Patterson Hood

this one isn't too big of a surprise, but it still sucks that we'll be seeing a different line-up whenever DBT rolls through town...I can't wait to hear the new albums from both

The tracks on his myspace page make me think I'll like his solo album.

Agreed. My excitement for going to see their The Dirt Beneath thing up in Athens later this month has been tempered a bit.

The John-Neff-as-a-permanent-member thing is the only silver lining here. Fucking love that guy.

Yeah, I immediately thought of this, but it will be worth it to whoop with Unfrozen Caveman Major, and SisterGAR.

Also, Isbell is probably the big winner here.

Are you saying that Patterson and Teh Stroker Ace are Losers?

Also, weren't Isbell and Shonna romantically involved at one point?

HE WAS A MARINE.

No, and after I posted that, I listened to SRO, and meant to retract.
BUT, on the last 3 albums, my fave sings have been Isbell songs (after you taight me that there were 3 writers/singers ;) )

I thought Isbell was tappin that out?

I wish that Stroker/Patterson/Isbell could form a fine Jagger/Richards partnership, and put their egos into that, instead of OPEN competition.

I think a whole album of Isbell songs is gonna be pretty hard to take. But there's hope if he works at spiffing up those lyric cliches and alt. country cliches he seems to fall back on.

The Truckers without Isbell will still be the Truckers as we've always known and loved 'em (ie: dense, dark, and mythic) but there's no doubt they'll be exactly two bright, hook-filled songs short on their next album.

This really sucks.

Yeah but I thought they'd have been in the business long enough to recognize that having him in the band and having all those great songs was a good thing instead of being threatened.

I'm not saying 100% that they felt that way but you KNOW that things weren't as amicable as that letter states. SOMETHING went down. Isbell is good but he's not as big as the Truckers.

I can see him not getting the props he deserved and attempting a power play or something and getting beat down. Could be the Jason Newstead/Ron Wood syndrome. No matter how long you've been in the band or what contributions you've made, you're still the "new guy".

I'll buy both of their albums.

AHHHHHH!!!!! Fuck!! I've been listening to Isbell's solo record, Sirens of the Ditch, and Isbell definitely saves his best songs for DBT.

I was listening to "Don't Be So Easy on Yourself" from Blessing and a Curse on the drive in this morning. Love that song.

This blows!!

So, his album isn't so hot?

My new working theory is that Isbell wouldn't help Stroker hide bodies anymore, so they brought in someone who not only will, but will contribute some of his own (Neff)

Going to a Trucker's show now will probably be akin to driving under an overpass during a Teamster's strike.

Yeah, "The Day John Henry Died" may be my favorite Truckers song.

I don't know this band at all, but I take it that there was suspicion of some sort of songwriters rivalry?

yeah, I think there was a palpable sense of competition going on when they played live, like "oh your song got a huge reaction, well here's my fucking song"

and, the bottom line is, its Patterson Hood's band and vision no matter how good or talented the other guys are.

Yeah, but like I said, they could have worked this out for the greater good. There is no doubt they are a better band with him in the tent pissin out, rather than outside the tent pissin in.

Maybe I'll drive up to TEH SHOALS and knock someone out.

It's all starting to come into focus.

Isbell brings in some new songs and they are uber melodic pop songs along the lines of "Daylight". One actually has a line in it about "I'll will love you forever my darling".

Stroker goes into a rage. "WHAT THE FUCK KIND OF PUSSY SHIT IS THIS JASON!!!!!" "That's not going on MY fucking record!"

"FUCK YOU MIKE!" "Why don't you shut the fuck up and do some more blow asshole!, and and BTW SPACE CITY SUCKS!!!!"

well fuck, i knew isbell was releasing a solo album but i didn't know he'd be leaving. sure, touring for the album but leaving the band? this sucks. some of my favorite dbt songs are written/played/sung by isbell. he's incredibly talented.
