I always talk about how great this record is, but it's been a while since I've actually listened to it.
I just remedied that now and oh my, but that hits the spot. It's like getting an itch scratched that you didn't even realize you had. Now I need a cigarette.

Derek Bostrom, the Pups' drummer and historian has graciously posted a board recording of one of their 1987 shows at the Meat Puppets' site.
Here:

In two parts. Listen with love.

In order (literally):
Meat Puppets II
Up On the Sun
Out My Way
Mirage
Huevos

Personally, I think that the rest of their output (Meat Puppets, Monsters, No Joke, and anything released with the replacement-Pups) is expendable, if not downright crap.

Just got to the end of this live thing, and "Maiden's Milk" is the height of inspired stupidity! Love it.

Gah!! I just wasted $14 on MP II.

What a pile- it sounds like they learned how to play their instruments 15 minutes before the session.

Fuck. Oh, well. At least there are bonus tracks.

I'm surprised. Maybe you can argue with the vocals, but I don't think there's ever been an issue with the playing. If you're looking for the virtuoso stuff, you already have the best of that. But of the SST records, I think that Out My Way probably has the best playing, followed closely by Mirage.

Yeah, the thing that got me was how different it sounded than the 2 discs I have. I expected more of the same, and instead, I got primitive MP, almost punk.

No worries. AllMusic has it at 5 stars, so you're not the only one raving about it.

The 2 Pups songs that Nirvana covered on Unplugged were from MPII. And the Minutemen did a cool version of "Lost" on 3-Way Tie For Last.

Just to be disagreeable; their debut is the only one I really give a crap about. And, Finch, if II was too sloppy and grimey to be your cuppa tea...stay far, far away from the debut.
