RCA Records announces today the re-signing of Foo Fighters to a new long-term recording agreement. Initially signed to RCA in 1999 the Foos, led by Dave Grohl with Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel and Chris Shiflett, have sold over 20 million albums worldwide to date.

Foo Fighters are coming off their first live album, Skin and Bones, which documented the band's summer 2006 tour. This series of intimate theater shows featured acoustic-flavored songs from the landmark double disc set, In Your Honor, along with fresh new interpretations of favorites from the band's entire career. In Your Honor received tremendous critical praise -- The New York Times hailed it as "an unexpected magnum opus."

This month the band returns to the recording studio to begin work on their sixth album with world-class producer Gil Norton, whose credits include Foo Fighters' double platinum & Grammy-nominated The Colour and the Shape (1997) and classic albums by the Pixies, Echo & the Bunnymen and Patti Smith.

Nice choice of producers.

I love me some Foo Fighters. I've been really happy with their latest 2 releases. I need to pull those out. I haven't heard them in awhile.

I'd love it if they returned to the sound of their earlier stuff, instead of more garden-variety modern rock.

Got my new driver's license photo today. Wife swears that Dave Grohl shoved me aside at the flash.

I think of all the "mainstream" top 40 rock bands, that the Foos have my most respect. I really like Grohl, both in his musical and public personalities. His Kilbourn appearances are legendary.

It's not possible that it's been almost 10 years since "The Colour And The Shape" came out. I still remember waiting for that album like a heroin junkie on 53rd & 3rd, based solely on my love of "Monkey Wrench". I was between freshman and sophomore years in college.

And, yes, I'm listening to it right now. And it still rawks balls.

I remember loving the singles from the first two. And even the third, to some extent.

Since then it's been downhill.

It was the precursor of the pre-willenial-tension emo boomlet, though.

So, I take off points for that.

If Grohl and co. get a slap on the wrist for that, then Weezer needs their fuckin' heads chopped off since "Pinkerton" was/is The Alpha for that (bowel) movement.

There's no comparison.

Actually, I'm meh on Weezer's contribution to end of the century emo. That is, because I consider the scene's embrace of Pinkerton, as some sort of "lost jewel" of alt-rock, to have been at least 51% ironic/irono-contrarian. As such, I don't think the themes addressed on the record, nor the sound, contributed to later, "emotive" rock.

On the other hand, Foo Fighters was one-half of Sunny Day Real Estate thru the first three songs (if I recall correctly, Goldsmith is on three Colour & Shape tracks), & Grohl was in Nirvana, which was as much a "contributor" to later emo as was Weezer, but more likely, more of a contributor. (E.g., Nirvana's sound begets Mineral.) Plus, just look at the title of the record. "Pinkerton" is an ambiguous choice, & could just as easily be a Billy Joel or Bruce Springsteen 70s album as it could be a Hot Rod Circuit or Get-up Kids album. "Colour & Shape" screams -- this album released by vagrant.

So, yeah...

Jeezub, Andrewth, that's like saying you hate Marilyn Monroe because she led to Anna Nicole.

Only if that means Weezer is Bettie Page to Nirvana's Marilyn... Bettie was/is much hotter.

Yeah, but Bettie turned into a reclusive conservative Christian whereas Marilyn had the sense to get murdered by the mob in her prime.

Ah. Rivers turned into a recluse creative-writing student at Harvard, & supposedly is celibate. Kurt either blew his brain out, or was murdered by Courtney.

Sounds about right, then?

Either way, your argument stands up about as well as I do.
