...and all you hear is your staff complain how much they don't want to be here. As if Iwant to fuckin' be here!! So, you call 'em on it...

"Hey, if you have things to do, go ahead and leave."
"No, no, that's ok."
"Are you sure? I know you have a lot of stuff to do at home."
"No, no, I'll stay." (said with a complete look of disgust)

"Uhm...when are you going to be done with your work so you can help us?"
"See these three stacks? I'm almost done with those."
"And then you'll help us?"
"Sure, as soon as I'm done with this OTHER stack of updates." (It's almost two inches thick.)

She walked away grumbling.

This is the attitude I've had to deal with for the past month or so. I've already told one to get his act together. Now the other one has adopted his attitude -- good thing she's going on vacation at the end of the week. It'll be one less 'tude to deal with.

I sure could use my pal, Alcohol, right now.

The thought has crossed my mind.

By the way, I'd like to state now how much I hate the use of the word "boo". As in, "Ohhh no, boo, lemme tell you what I think!" One of my assistants has begun using this word. Everytime I hear it, I wanna cringe. No, I wanna kick him in the 'nads.

I've been inputting new employee information into our HR database. We have an Employee Info Sheet which the employee completes with his / her personal information. One of the fields is "Nickname". Fair enough question, right? If your name is Francis Robert Smith, but prefer to go by "Bob" or "Frank"...no big deal.

One of the managers at one of my new clients put down his nick..."Greggy Pooh". Uhhh, yeahhhhhh. Greggy Pooh. The man is almost 50, a manager and he puts down that he prefers to be called fuckin' GREGGY POOH!!! Christ.

Just checked out Greggy Pooh's ID. He's 5'7" and weighs 125 lbs. I can easily kick his ass.

werd!

You can't overwork people and expect them to not grumble. I work overtime, but I get paid for it. I've got a ton of other things that I would rather be doing with my family, but I don't grumble about having to work. If I weren't getting paid, I would feel like it is my right to grumble and be mad at being forced to work overtime. Are their salaries high enough that they should work on weekends, or are there nice year end bonuses?

You can't burn out your whole team and expect them to not be disgruntled. There is a reason the 40 hour work week is standard. If they are so overworked for a long period of time, you need more people.

I'm sorry timmy, but what world do you live in???? 40 hour workweeks for salaried employees? Get real. I don't know Tania's circumstances but it sounds as though this isn't a normal thing for her to have people come in and work on days off.

(serenity now)

and T-girl? Remember that other post you had about gripes and venting? Be sure to remember the things you are grateful for. Not criticizin', just sayin'. I have to remember to do that myself from time to time.

it's a shame that you are right.

i've decided to leave this life (and my slowly growing salary), and i don't have a family or debt or irresistible spending habits so i can . . . but shit man, the 50, 60 or even 70 hour work week sucks so fucking much and makes life pointless.

First of all, I absolutely hate to work on the weekend unless I have to to. To ask my staff to do so is a huge deal for me. I would rather do the work then ask them to come in during their time off. It's important to have a work / life balance.

Secondly, the employee who complained had never been requested to work over a weekend until recently.

Thirdly, this time last year was absolutely boring. We barely had any work and pretty much invented projects to work on. This isn't an "all the time" deal. Last week, we hired four temps to assist us with the work we're doing on.

Lastly, one of my staff did not take ownership of his responsibilities. If he had been more involved, working on the weekend to help him would've been a moot point. Btw, this last point was actually what made the employee mentioned in the second point complain.

TJ, I'm glad that you work a 40 hour week and that you get paid overtime. My staff and I are salaried employees (pretty good wages too with quarterly bonus incentives) and we knew what sort of job we were taking on. We knew that there was a possibility there would be days when we'd have to work more than an 8 hour day. My feelings are if you want to work a 40 hour week, then find a job where you'll have less responsibilities and get paid an hourly wage. Way too many times I come across an employee who only wants to work the bare minimum (which has become the attitude of one of my staff members). Fine, work the bare minimum but don't expect to be rewarded for satisfactory work when you could be doing outstanding work.

I'm done ranting.

Well, if they have quarterly incentives, and they knew the job scope going in, that's another matter. If someone wants to work the bare minimum, I don't think they should necessarily be penalized. I sure as hell don't think they should be getting any quarterly bonuses. I like having the people who do the bare minimum in the office, for either one of 2 reasons: 1. They are normally older, and have worked their share of 60 hour work weeks and indispensible for their pool of knowledge, or 2. They are a warm body getting work done and are first to go when an ax needs to drop.
It's always nice knowing there is someone else in the office that is going to get laid off before me. :P

I'm not bitching that these people have the right to not work more than 40 hours, although they might. I don't know the nature of your job, or pay structure, or anything really. Many jobs have their up and down times. I worked for a place that didn't pay overtime, but they would make 50 hour work weeks mandatory to make up for some previous slow times, but in the slow times they still had to work 40 hours. how silly is that. I think if there are slow times, they should go to 90% salary and 36 hour work weeks or something. I know lots of firms that have done that to make it even across the table.

I understand the whole "that's the world we live in today" mantra. But, the world we live in is bullshit if you can't work a full week and expect to have free time to yourself. I'd rather be poor. Wage slavery sucks.
