Ha. Nice.

daily convo:

Me: Ok, so I've put all 2 pages of text on the screen here, and then yr logo here.

Client: Can you make the logo bigger, there's still some room between that word to push and pull a little.

In tv we have the text safe and picture safe areas. Clients don't get that, which I can understand--whole different vernacular. I do, however expect them to understand it after 14 revisions.

Also, red doesn't show well on tv. Just how it goes, why do people insist on it--oh, because its red, right.

I also love when you ask people for a logo and they give you a itsy-bitsy logo from a business card. Apparently, I'm using photoshop and illustrator wrong since I can't "make it bigger on the computer".

You guys have to understand that when we go to these business seminars and they talk about advertising, its always all about "giant logo, giant phone number"

I have learned to embrace the white space though I still like a giant fucking phone number.

The thing is, at least in the tv field--how many times are you watching tv, see a 30 sec ad with a phone number and remember that phone number. Unless you watch tv with a pad next to you, you don't. Forget the phone number, and use a web address or town name. If your ad was successful, people will hunt you down.

edit--

btw Graphic peoples, Adobe Creative Suite 3 is shipping. Whoop.

Yeah, I just got a copy of CS2, though I still really like 7. All I can hope is that the station gets it. For me, working in the video field, it certainly caters to it much more with its added functions.

:notes: "eight hundred five eight eight two three hundred Em-pire" :notes:

Those bastards hammer their phone number home in their TV spots for sure but its a point well made. I've never done a TV spot though so I gotta go with what I know in print: Business name, phone number, plus some sort of special to grab people.

But look at what you quoted--a jingle, not a phone number typed on screen.

Oh yeah, print is a whole 'nother animal.

Strangely enough in the storage business, the suggestion is to just let Public Storage be your TV advertising since most people who have never rented storage before don't know the difference and think that EVERYTHING must be Public Storage, and then straighten people out when you get them on the phone or on your property.

I made a commerical for PODs at one point. Very interesting concept.

I don't like CS2.

I'll probably get CS3 later in the year.

Oh, and my contribution, from an actual email I received last week about an ad:

Quote:
Can't remember did you put [redacted community name] in italics and bold. Actually if you can do it, I would like the entire Ad copy done in bold.

Leave the type the same, but tell them you made it all bold, but had to shrink down the font size so it would still fit.

Ah, clients.

For some reason, at the studio where I do most of my work (TV stuff, generally cartoon-related), ad agencies are always the worst clients. A little off topic, I know, but for the past month I wanted to vent about the job I was on so badly. What a nightmare.

two designers who aren't from the same agency working together NEVER works well. They both assume the other one sucks ass and is a huge idiot.
