Led Zeppelin - In Through the Out Door
It's their pop masterpiece. Unjustly maligned because it's not the heavy, rock album that their fans want -- always. And it's not chock full of mandolins and blatantly classical musical aspirations like III or Physical Graffitti, or even IV.

Still, as pop records of the 70's and early 80's go, this one is right at the top of the heap. I love this record and I love John Paul Jones' production. Although it was admittedly a strange way for them to go out.

I think Zeppelin III is their best album and that's not a heavy rock album

nor is my second favorite album of theirs, Physical Graffiti (for the most part)

Pink Floyd - Obscured by Clouds is my entry. The album before Dark Side of the Moon finds the band doing soundtrack material once again, but this time they manage to string together several songs and actually make a damn cohesive album out of it. It gives Meddle a run for its money as the best pre-dark side, post-barrett floyd album.

Okay, point taken. I guess what I was trying to say is that it was an atypical album, even for a band that didn't really have a singular sound. It was a 180° turn from just about everything they had done before.

"Fool in the Rain" and "Hot Dog" are both pretty awesome, but I could probably do without ever hearing "All My Love" and "In The Evening" again for as long as I live. "South Bound Suarez" is also quite enjoyable. This is the most un-Zep LZ album, to be sure.

I will agree that they had certainly not done an album like this before

It was my intro to Zepplin. Some kid brought the tape to some summer camp one year and he played side 1 over and over and over.

So I suppose I have sentimental reasons for liking it.

I still like on a summer day although "Carouselambra" is an embarassment.

I love Jimmy Page's guitar work on "I'm Gonna Crawl".

I don't know if it gets overlooked but it seems that The Jesus and Mary Chain's "Automatic" never gets the love that the others do. "PsychoCandy" is always labeled the masterpiece and "Darklands" and "Honey's Dead" are the "underappreciated" masterpieces and Automatic just had the big hit on it. I still love that album.

another one - Badfinger - Wish You Were Here - their best band album by a country mile and so criminally overlooked because it was virtually never released stateside

-Van: His Band and the Street Choir is my favorite.
-Dylan: that one is my favorite
-DJ: Was my intro to the band and, ragged as it is, yeah I love it.

In short: I have to agree with you on a lot of these.

Oh, and re: Buzzcocks, their 1996 album (was it All Set?) is pretty great.

i keep thinking that if i like the album it's not overlooked, and if i don't like it that you're wrong and it's properly rated.

its ok I was really referring to the other original run albums like Another Music in a different kitchen and A Different Kind of Tension. I never understand why people love Singles going steady and don't get the other albums.

and "Into the Music" is probably my favorite Van

I think Jaco's a big reason here.

Maybe 4 years was too long to wait after Sweet Oblivion, I don't know. I think it's brilliant, though.
